    The Skin Benefits of Glycerin, One of Skincare’s Oldest Ingredients

    Glycerin is quite possibly one of the oldest skincare ingredients in existence. We have documentation dating back as far as the late eighteenth century showing that it was used for hygiene. Chances are, if you pick up a personal care product, you’ll see glycerin somewhere on the ingredient list. Glycerin is such a staple in the beauty industry, but for a long time, no one gave it a second thought. It was drowned out by the hype about other hydrating ingredients, despite being just as effective. In the past couple of years, I’ve noticed glycerin getting more recognition for the powerhouse that it is. In this post, I’ll break down the history of glycerin, why it’s so beneficial for your skin, and how it stacks up against other hydrating ingredients.

    What is Glycerin, and Where Does It Come From?

    Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is a fatty alcohol. People are sometimes surprised by this because of the pervasive belief that alcohol in skincare is bad. This is really only true of drying alcohols. In fact, many of the skincare ingredients you know and love can be classified as fatty alcohols! They excel at moisturizing, softening, and conditioning the skin. 

    Glycerin is a byproduct of the oil industry. When oil is extracted from something and processed, glycerin is left over. Historically, it was derived from extra animal fat and mixed with wood ash to create soap. As far as the cosmetic industry goes, a vast majority of glycerin now comes from plant-based sources. This could be anything from your basic corn, soy, or flax to something more exotic, like Karanja weed. If it can be turned into oil, it can be a source of glycerin. At the end of the day, one source of glycerin isn’t superior to the other since you end up with the same chemical compound either way. 

    How Does Glycerin Benefit the Skin?

    Glycerin is included in a class of ingredients known as humectants (you’re probably already familiar with hyaluronic acid, the proverbial superstar of humectants). This means it attracts water molecules like a magnet to increase water content in the skin. This is an incredibly important function because it helps prevent dehydrated skin (not to be confused with dry skin). Dehydration can segue into a whole host of other skin issues, including fine lines, crepey or rough texture, and sensitivity.

    The more hydrated your skin is, the more light it will be able to reflect. This means humectants like glycerin can also help skin appear more glowy.

    In smaller percentages, glycerin can also be used as a stabilizer or to improve the texture of a product. Chemists love this ingredient because it’s effective, abundant, and inexpensive. 

    Who Can Use Glycerin?

    In addition to being effective, glycerin is a very gentle ingredient. This means almost anyone can use it, and it’s also appropriate for all skin types. It’s so innocuous that it can be used every day (or even multiple times a day). 

    Regardless of whether your skin is oily or dry, ALL skin types need water. Our skin cells can’t survive without water! The key here is that once you get water into the skin, you need to create a barrier that keeps that water in. This barrier is created with lipids (aka oils), and it’s where your skin’s moisture barrier comes into play—it keeps the good in and the bad out. Because of this, it’s essential that you apply a moisturizer after using a humectant like glycerin. Naturally oilier skin types (like Skin Types 1-4) don’t need to add much oil and can use something light. Combination or dry skin types (like Skin Types 5-9) don’t produce as much oil on their own, so they’ll want to reach for something richer.

    The only time I would advise against using glycerin (or any other humectant for that matter) is if you’re in a very dry environment, like an airplane. Since there’s no water in the air for the glycerin to attract, you run the risk of it pulling water out of the deeper layers of your skin instead.

    BTW, drinking water won’t hydrate your skin (but these three things will)

    Will Glycerin Make Me Break Out?

    Since glycerin is derived from oil, some people are concerned it will clog their pores or cause them to break out. This isn’t the case—you would have to apply it at a concentration of almost 100% for it to become comedogenic, and this is never how it’s used in products. Glycerin is actually a great ingredient for breakout-prone skin because it can be added to acne-focused formulas to make them less drying. 

    To Get the Skin Benefits of Glycerin, What Kinds of Products Should I Use?

    To get all the best hydrating, skin-plumping benefits from glycerin, turn to leave-on products. This isn’t to say glycerin can’t be a great ingredient in rinse-off products like cleansers. As I mentioned, it can improve the texture of a product and give it moisturizing properties. But if your goal is to improve the water content of your skin and pull in as much moisture as possible, a leave-on product is the way to go. Try reaching for a toner or a serum (I like the Vitamin C&E Treatment or Skin Drink Concentrate). 

    Moisturizers with glycerin can also be very beneficial. Many moisturizers will use a mix of humectants, like glycerin, along with more emollient ingredients to give you the full spectrum of moisturization.

    How Does Glycerin Stack Up Against Hyaluronic Acid?

    It’s easy to be seduced by the huge amount of PR hyaluronic acid has gotten over the years—and don’t get me wrong, it’s a great ingredient! But this has also led to the misconception that it’s far superior to other hydrating ingredients. At the end of the day, glycerin and hyaluronic acid both function as humectants and have a very similar effect on the skin. 

    There are two main upsides to glycerin—it’s a smaller molecule than hyaluronic acid, and it’s less expensive to formulate with. Smaller molecule size means it’s able to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which is where it will be most effective. Hyaluronic acid can be chopped up into smaller molecule sizes as well. But since it doesn’t start out that way and needs more processing, you’ll usually end up paying more for a hyaluronic acid serum that has multiple weights of hyaluronic acid.

    Another difference between the two ingredients (and where hyaluronic acid has the upper hand), is texture. Higher-end, well-formulated hyaluronic acid tends to have a silkier texture than glycerin, which can feel a bit sticky or tacky before it dries down.  

    At the end of the day, it really comes down to marketing, budget, and consumer preference.

    What better way than to combine my two of my favorite breakfast foods: oatmeal and banana bread!

    Oatmeal is one of my go-to breakfasts during the chillier months when I’m craving something warm and comforting in the morning. 

    And banana bread is such a nostalgic comfort food for me. There’s nothing better than the smell of banana bread baking in the oven.

    So I figured why not combine the flavor of banana bread with a bowl of hearty oats!

    With only 1 minute of prep and 9 minutes cook time, this oatmeal is ready in just 10 minutes!

    You can make this fresh for a lazy weekend morning, or batch prep and store in the fridge or freezer for an easy-to-reheat breakfast on your way to work or to drop off the kids! 

    Ingredients You’ll Need

    Notes on Ingredients

    old-fashioned rolled oats: you can use old-fashioned oats, quick steel cut oats, or steel cut oats. Whichever oats strike your fancy! I like using quick steel cut or old-fashioned. 

    almond milk: Almond milk is my go-to for cooking and baking because of it’s mild, neutral taste but feel free substitute with cow’s milk or your favorite non-dairy milk alternative.

    cinnamon: the perfect cozy spice for banana bread

    vanilla: to help give it that banana bread flavor

    brown sugar: to help caramelize the bananas. You can substitute for coconut sugar or maple syrup. 

    banana: you’ll cook half of the banana in the oatmeal and then caramelize the rest to use as a topping!

    chopped walnuts: we’re toasting these with the banana slices for a topping. I love the texture, flavor and source of fat walnuts add. Feel free to swap for a different type of nut or omit if you’d like.

    butter: to sauté the banana slices for topping. Can substitute for coconut oil or ghee, if desired.

    How to Make Banana Bread Oatmeal

    Add ingredients to saucepan. Add oats, almond milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, salt and half of the banana slices to a small saucepan and stir to combine.
    Cook oats. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until liquid is absorbed and oats are thickened, about 8-10 minutes.
    Caramelize the bananas and toast walnuts. While oatmeal is cooking, heat butter in a small nonstick pan over medium heat. Add brown sugar and stir with butter until combined. Add banana slices and walnuts, turning banana slices over once caramelized, about 2 minutes. Cook for another 1-2 minutes. Remove walnuts from heat once fragrant and slightly browned, about 2-3 minutes.
    Build your oatmeal. Top cooked oatmeal with caramelized banana and toasted walnuts and/or chocolate chips or a drizzle of maple syrup for additional sweetness! 

    Expert Tips

    If using quick steel cut oats, use 1/4 cup oats and 3/4 cup almond milk. Heat ingredients over medium-high heat until liquid has absorbed and oatmeal is thickened, about 6-8 minutes.
    Walnuts toast quickly – be sure to keep an eye that they don’t burn!
    When your oatmeal is cooking, don’t forget to stir it a few times so the bananas don’t burn or stick to the bottom

    Is oatmeal and banana good together?

    I love adding banana into oatmeal for a touch of natural sweetness and delicious flavor. Adding a banana to your oatmeal also adds a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber!

    What if I want this recipe to have more protein?

    While walnuts and oats contain some protein, you can absolutely make this a high protein dish by adding in protein powder while cooking or by adding greek yogurt or cottage cheese as a topping! 

    What are the benefits of oatmeal?

    Oats are a nutritious whole grain, providing a good source of the following nutrients: protein, selenium, fiber, iron, vitamin B1, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and copper. They contain soluble fiber, which has been shown to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. They also contain prebiotics, which are like food for probiotics (good gut bacteria), and may help support a healthy GI tract.

    Wondering whether or not to fast after a binge? Keep reading to learn why it’s not a good idea, and what you should do instead.

    Experiencing a binge eating episode can be very overwhelming. Just after realizing what has happened and what took place, you may feel overwhelmed, confused, or even ashamed. As a result, a common human reaction is to try and fix it or erase it. This often leads to fasting. 

    Unfortunately, fasting only perpetuates the situation. It leads to recurrent episodes of binge eating and fasting, with no end in sight. If you’ve experienced this cycle before, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. 

    Thankfully, there are five steps you can take to stop this cycle and move forward after a binge.

    What is Binge Eating?

    Before we discuss what should happen after a binge, it’s important to establish what binge eating really is.

    Binge eating is characterized by the consumption of exceptionally large amounts of food in a short period of time with little to no self-control. Afterward, participants often feel guilt, stress, and shame. Binge eating is different from overeating in that it’s completely mindless and often recurrent. It also usually involves larger quantities of food. 

    Should I Fast After a Binge?

    The short answer is no, and here’s why. Fasting ensures that the cycle will continue. You’ll eventually hit your breaking point and feel so hungry that you simply can’t take it anymore. The result? More often than not, another binge. 

    To prevent this from happening and move past this cycle for good, start by implementing the five steps below. 

    5 Steps You Should Take After a Binge Instead of Fasting 

    Lead With Compassion

    Compassion is so important here. It sounds silly, it sounds like it’s not really that important. But in the context of binge eating, it’s very important. Binge eating and guilt go hand in hand. One often can’t survive without the other in this scenario. 

    By leading with compassion, you can start to slowly but surely remove the guilt. After you’ve engaged in a binge eating episode, it may feel natural to beat yourself up. But instead, try out utilizing compassion next time. With compassion and without judgment, ask yourself what happened and what went wrong. Empathize with yourself as you would a friend or a family member. Guilt propels the cycle, compassion ends it. 

    Eat in Accordance with Your Hunger 

    Fasting leads to extreme hunger, and extreme hunger can lead to binge eating. Smaller, more frequent meals lead to sustainable satiety and manageable hunger. This prevents extreme surges in hunger which lead to larger intakes of food and that overly full feeling. If we can remove extreme hunger and extreme fullness from the equation, you’re much less likely to engage in binge eating again. 

    In order to do this, touch base with your own unique hunger and satiety cues. And do so frequently! Periodically throughout the day, stop and pause. Ask yourself, how hungry am I? How full am I? Would eating something help to reduce my hunger pangs right now? 

    Over time, this will become easier and more natural. It will start to feel like second nature! 

    Ditch the Diet Foods and Eat Balanced Meals 

    Just as we discussed earlier, a common human reaction after binge eating is to try and fix it or erase it. Alongside fasting, diet foods are another common perceived solution. You ate too much, so now you should try your best to eat as little as possible, right?

    You might think low-calorie diet foods are a good idea, but these will prevent you from feeling satiated and satisfied after eating. Which in turn will make it easier for you to mindlessly overeat. If on the other hand, you consume meals filled with rich nutrients that not only satiate you but also satisfy you, you’ll be much less likely to mindlessly overeat.

    Stay Hydrated 

    Just as we need food for fuel, we need water as well! The body craves it. If we’re constantly dehydrated, this can make it more likely for us to seek out hydration through food. Be sure to keep water nearby throughout the day and stay hydrated as best as you can. 

    Move Gently and Don’t Overexercise 

    Back to that solution-based mindset. Exercise is another common perceived solution. “I ate too much so I’ll just exercise to compensate!”. 

    I’m sure you guessed it at this point, but this again perpetuates the cycle. Exercising, especially overexercising, utilizes more energy and exhausts us. What does the body do in response? It asks for more energy so it can recover and recuperate! 

    Instead of overexercising and attempting to punish yourself, gently and compassionately move your body in a way that feels good to you. That could be a brief walk or even a short yoga flow. We don’t want to cease movement altogether, but we certainly don’t want to push ourselves too hard and overexercise.

    The main takeaway here is that fasting is not the answer. There are so many other viable options instead! Be kind to your body and yourself, and before you know it you’ll be on your way to breaking the cycle.

    5 Red Flags During a Facial, Plus What to Do If Your Treatment Goes Wrong

    Most people getting a facial are looking for one of two things. One, you’re looking to relax, feel pampered, and emerge dewy and glowing like a freshwater pearl. Two, you have specific skin concerns, are looking for solutions, and want to get right down to business. 

    What you experience during and after your facial can vary a lot depending on which of these you’re going for, so it can be hard to know what’s considered “normal” during, or even after, a treatment. Sometimes, not knowing can cost you. A bad facial can lead to irritation, scabbing, breakouts, and more. In this post, I’ll share five red flags to watch out for during a facial. I’ll also break down some common issues that can be caused by a bad facial and how to fix them. 

    5 Red Flags To Watch Out For During a Facial

    1. Bad Communication

    As far as I’m concerned, bad communication from your esthetician is the number one red flag during a facial. While there are standard steps involved in most facials, each treatment should be tailored to the client. This means you should go into a facial knowing what to expect during and after.

    During your treatment, your esthetician should explain the steps to you (at least if it’s your first time with them). They should also tell you what to expect in terms of sensations. For example, professional-strength peels can cause a stinging sensation that you wouldn’t expect from an at-home peel. Or, high-frequency devices used for acne may feel like they’re zapping you. If you don’t know what to expect, you may not know to speak up when something is off. 

    Your expectation should also be very clear about what you can expect from you skin after the treatment. This is important because it will help you determine whether or not a response you’re having is normal. If it’s not, you should be able to reach out to your esthetician for solutions. 

    Finally, a provider should always be upfront about hidden fees or costs. If anything performed during your treatment is considered an add-on, you shouldn’t be finding out about it at the end. 

    2. Not Getting a Consultation 

    This means a consultation beforehand is critical. Your esthetician should ask you questions about your concerns and goals, any sensitivities or skin conditions, and which products and/or prescriptions you use. It’s also good to let your esthetician know if you’re getting a facial with a certain event in mind—if you’re attending a wedding in two days, you won’t want to get extractions or a crazy strong peel since these can both result in light flaking for a few days. 

    3. Pain or Discomfort During Your Facial 

    As I said, some treatments can get a little spicy, so it’s really important for your esthetician to prepare you for what’s normal and what isn’t. That said, if you’re in a lot of pain (like intense burning from a chemical peel) or discomfort (some people are more sensitive to extractions than others), speak up. If your esthetician doesn’t listen and keeps trying to do things that are uncomfortable to you, it could be a red flag. 

    Learn whether or not it’s normal for your at-home skincare products to sting.

    4. A Distracted Esthetician

    I had a facial once where the esthetician turned on the steamer and then left the room for almost 30 minutes. Since I was tucked into the treatment bed and had a mask all over my face, I wasn’t exactly able to go look for her. Eventually, the steam turned off, so I was just lying in a darkened room wondering when my treatment would resume. As it turned out, estheticians at this spa were required to split their time between two clients at once.

    Whether it’s an esthetician who keeps leaving the room or checking their phone, you want someone who is 100% focused on you and the treatment they’re providing. Some of the peel and tools used during a facial are very powerful and require someone’s full attention (not to mention if you need something adjusted). 

    5. Overly Aggressive Extractions

    I know I’ve already mentioned extractions somewhat, but it’s worth it’s own red flag since a bad experience can cause serious damage to your skin. Extractions were a bit of a specialty for me back when I was regularly giving facials at my spa. After properly prepping and softening the skin, I would employ the “three strikes and you’re out” rule. This means that, instead of digging and digging at a clogged pore that’s not ready to come out, you try three times and then leave it be. Otherwise, you can really inflict damage in the form of hyperpigmentation or even scarring. If someone is being really aggressive with extractions and digging at a single spot for a long time, it’s a red flag.   

    What’s Normal and What Isn’t—How to Deal With a Facial Gone Wrong

    Establishing boundaries and expectations and asking questions beforehand is the best way to prevent issues. If something feels wrong during your facial, ALWAYS speak up. Here are a few common concerns after facials—what’s considered normal, what’s not, and how to get your skin back on track.

    Scabbing

    What’s Normal

    Minimal (and I do mean minimal) scabbing can be normal, depending on which treatments you’ve gotten. The biggest culprit is usually extractions. It’s the same as when you extract a whitehead at home—you’ve created an opening in the skin, and scabbing is part of the healing process. Needless to say, this scabbing should be very localized to a few extraction points (they shouldn’t be all over), and they should heal within a few days. 

    Light scabbing can also occur with treatments that go deeper, such as microneedling or laser. This is because they work by causing slight damage to encourage a healing response from the skin. These treatments are often performed in more of a medspa setting and aren’t part of a standard facial, but if you are getting a treatment like this, it’s important to ask your provider what to expect afterward. 

    What’s Not

    Large patches of scabbing aren’t normal, and oozing scabs certainly aren’t normal. There’s also something called “frosting,” which can happen when someone is given a peel that’s way too strong for their skin. The skin turns a white-ish color, and it’s not a good thing. 

    How to Get Your Skin Back on Track

    Treat your scabs like you would a blemish. Don’t let the areas dry out or use anything harsh on them, and focus on hydration, hydration, hydration. Once the scabs are fully healed and all that’s left is flakiness, you can use a gentle physical scrub to smooth the skin.

    Breakouts

    What’s Normal

    If you’re someone with a lot of clogged pores or breakouts, it’s not unusual to have a little purging after a facial. This is because facials are very stimulating and can bring breakouts that were already brewing to the surface a little quicker. I mentioned my “three strikes and you’re out” rule—if a clogged pore doesn’t want to come out after three tries, I leave it alone. Sometimes, some of it will come out, but there’s still gunk left behind. This is better than continuing to dig and damaging the skin, but it also means your skin will probably push the rest of it out later, resulting in a small whitehead.

    What’s Not

    With that said, breakout activity should be minimal. It should only happen in areas where you already had clogged pores that were trying to come to the surface. You shouldn’t be getting brand-new breakouts, especially if they’re very red or inflamed. If this happens, it means the facial you got was too stimulating for your acne-prone skin.

    How to Get Your Skin Back on Track

    Use an all-over hydrating mask with antibacterial properties, like Rapid Response Detox Masque. For individual blemishes, use a spot treatment to dry up whiteheads. The important thing is to dry up individual blemishes, but not all of your skin. If blemishes are red and inflamed, use a non-drying spot treatment instead.

    Excessive Dryness or Flakiness

    What’s Normal

    Again, a degree of dryness or flaking can be normal after something like a strong chemical peel. This is simply a sign of your skin shedding old cells to make room for new ones, and in a few days, your skin will look brighter than ever. 

    What’s Not

    If your facial was more focused on hydration and glow, dryness isn’t a normal part of the post-facial process. Excessive dryness or flakiness that lasts for more than two to three days also isn’t normal. This means the facial was too strong for your skin, and your barrier has been compromised. 

    How to Get Your Skin Back on Track

    In this case, your best bet is to focus on barrier repair. Here are eight ways you can repair a damaged moisture barrier.

    Redness, Irritation, or Itching

    What’s Normal

    Depending on your skin type and how stimulating the facial was, it can be normal to experience some redness for the rest of the day. This is especially true if get extractions, which can leave red marks for even two days. It can also be normal for your skin to act a bit more sensitive than usual in the days following a facial and need to be babied, but it should never veer into irritation territory. There are also facials that are meant to soothe and calm. If your esthetician told you this was the goal but you’re experiencing redness and sensitivity after, it’s a good idea to let them know. 

    What’s Not

    Irritation or itching, and redness that lasts more than a day or two, is not normal. Itching especially is a sign of your skin reacting poorly to something. If you feel it during your treatment, be sure to say something. 

    How to Get Your Skin Back on Track

    First and foremost, stay away from active ingredients that could further inflame your skin. This includes retinol, exfoliating acids, and vitamin C. You’ll need to baby your skin until it no longer feels irritated by sticking to the basics—cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.     3 Ways to Navigate When Clothes Don’t Fit You (without another diet!)

    Sharing three tips for how to navigate when clothes don’t fit you, without trying a diet or intentional weight loss!

    When you leave dieting behind and begin to heal your relationship with food, you might notice some weight gain. When you have to diet in order to maintain a certain weight, that’s not the weight your body wants to naturally be at. Whatever weight you end up at once you have a more flexible and peaceful relationship with food is your healthy weight for your body.

    When folks naturally gain weight as part of their healing journeys, often grief comes up around letting go of the thin ideal. And grief also comes up around letting go of the clothes that used to “fit them.”

    But the reality is the clothes never fit them, they tried to fit into the clothes. It’s not your job to fit into clothes, it’s the clothes’ job to fit you. 

    Diet culture sells us a lie that we should keep all of our too tight clothing as a motivator to lose weight. Since when is a pair of jeans digging into your stomach a motivating force?

    You know what force that elicits? Shame.

    When you wear clothes that are not comfortable on your here-and-now body, you have a constant physical reminder that you hate your body. It’s basically an invitation for negative body image thoughts.

    So what do you do when your clothes no longer fit you? You find new clothes that feel good on your here-and-now body. Here are three tips on how to navigate this:

    Clean out your closet.

    If you’re still hanging onto clothes from high school or from 20 years ago, it’s time to let. them. go. Get rid of the clothes that are no longer serving you and no longer fitting comfortably on your body. No more convincing yourself that things fit when you’re having to squeeze into them and your thinking about the discomfort all day.

    Also, keeping clothes in your closet that don’t fit you is almost as bad for body image as wearing those clothes all day. Because every time you open that closet door, you’re going to be reminded that your clothes don’t fit and queue all the negative body thoughts.

    But imagine what it would be like to have a closet that’s been purged. Imagine a closet that only contains items that feel good on your body. What would it feel like to open up that closet door?

    If you’re worried about the act of cleaning out your closet being triggering that’s a totally valid concern and this is not an easy task! Try out some of these tips if they feel helpful to you: 

    Start by tossing out the things you know or are pretty certain don’t fit you. No need to try these on!
    Try cleaning out your closet in increments if it feels too daunting to do all at once. 
    Put on your favorite playlist (one rooted in empowerment or self-love would be great!)
    If you’re trying on items that you’re not sure of the fit, face away from a mirror and just notice how they feel on your body. If they don’t feel good, simply take ’em right off.
    Put the clothes that don’t fit out of sight. Donate them or store them in a box in the basement or attic (somewhere you will rarely see them).

    Find new clothes.

    I have to start this by saying there is a lot of financial and thin privilege wrapped up in this recommendation (and I myself hold these privileges). You might not have the financial means to buy new clothing and if you’re looking for plus-size clothing, your options and access are limited. Also, if your body is still changing you may not want to invest a lot in new clothes just yet.

    Here are some options if access is challenging:

    Shop at Goodwill or other thrift stores.
    Use the Fit Liberty program at Universal Standard and exchange your items for free within a year if your size changes.
    Check out this list of size-inclusive stores that my friend and colleague Rachel put together!
    Especially if your body is still changing, buy clothes that have some give like flowy dresses, loose blouses, and stretchy pants.
    Start a clothing swap with a friend or neighbor.

    Once you find new clothes, you’ll have to try them on, which can also be triggering for poor body image. Here are my tips for how to try on new clothing to gauge how it fits:

    Grab/order a bunch of different sizes, including sizes that are above what you normally wear because sizing is ALL OVER THE MAP from store to store and brand to brand.
    Start trying on the piece of clothing FACING AWAY FROM THE MIRROR. This is going to allow you to focus on how the clothing feels on your body first before paying attention to how it looks on your body.
    With the piece of clothing on, move around a little in it first, and if it does not feel comfortable on your body, take if off BEFORE turning around to face the mirror. No reason to see a piece of clothing that doesn’t fit you!
    Once you have a piece of clothing on that feels good and comfortable on your here-and-now body with some movement, then turn around toward the mirror and see how the piece of clothing looks and if you like the color, style, etc.

    Let yourself grieve.

    Any time you let something go or give something up, there is likely to be some grief that follows. It’s okay to feel grief around getting rid of your clothes! It’s completely normal and understandable.

    Certain items of clothing often represent significant and meaningful points in our lives. Maybe there’s a blouse that you wore on the first date with your partner. Maybe there’s a dress you purchased while on a special vacation.

    Our clothes hold meaning to us. They also serve as a form of expression and so maybe in some ways it feels like you’re throwing away pieces of your personality.

    One tip I learned from Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, is to say thank you to your clothes before you put them in the box or bag to donate. It sounds silly but it’s a nice way to acknowledge those special moments or seasons in your life associated with the clothing.

    In a way, it’s saying thank you for serving me during this former season of life and acknowledging that they are no longer serving you.

    Let yourself feel all the feels when getting rid of clothes. It sucks to have to buy new clothes. And it may be inaccessible to buy new clothes depending on your level of privilege. 

    When you let feelings wash over you and through you, you allow space for other feelings like gratitude. You might start to feel grateful for the new clothes and how they help you to feel more comfortable and think less about your body.

    Maybe you start to feel proud of yourself for engaging in an act of body respect and kindness (yes, wearing comfortable clothes is an act of body respect!).

    Maybe you start to feel more free. Liberated from the conditioning that told you your body wasn’t good enough and needed to shrink to fit a certain clothing size. Liberated to stop paying as much attention to your body, and shifting that attention to other things in your life that light you up.
