    Unfortunately, studies show belly fat increases the risk of things like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It also can be uncomfortable and make finding clothes that fit challenging.

    Thankfully, there is good news for those of us who want to target this problematic area — and the solution may lie in boosting your soluble fiber intake.


    What is Soluble Fiber?


    Soluble fiber is a carbohydrate that can slow down how fast your stomach releases digested food into your gut when it mixes with water. It’s a bit different than its counterpart, insoluble fiber, which helps our bodies form stools.


    What are the Benefits of Eating It?


    Several studies explore the benefits of increasing how much soluble fiber you consume. In one 2012 study, researchers found that participants who increased their soluble fiber intake by 10 grams had a 3.7% lower risk of gaining belly fat.

    Another 2012 study found that higher insoluble fiber consumption meant lower belly fat and inflammation. Still, another 2009 study concluded that participants who reduced their fiber intake had a higher risk of gaining belly fat.

    People who eat soluble fiber also have a higher number and diversity of good bacteria living in their guts. These bacteria assist with vital physiological processes like creating vitamins and processing waste. A 2016 study found a link between gut bacteria variety and lower belly fat, and several others found the same link with better health outcomes in life.

    What’s more, soluble fiber is a potent appetite suppressant. That may help you reduce the number of calories you eat, which in turn can help with weight loss.


    What Foods are Good Sources of Soluble Fiber?


    The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture recommends men consume 30-38 grams of fiber per day, and that women should aim for 21-25 grams daily.

    Experts recommend people who don’t currently eat high levels of soluble fiber increase their daily intake gradually to avoid unpleasant side effects like bloating, diarrhea, and stomach aches.

    Addressing Specific Issues

    For calluses and cracked heels, use specialized treatments to alleviate discomfort and prevent further complications. Regular use of a pumice stone and applying thick, reparative creams can make a significant difference.

    A Guide for Foot Treatments

    Whether your clients are dealing with cracked heels, callused feet or simply need a rejuvenating foot treatment, this guide will help you prepare and provide the best care possible for their feet.

    1. Preparation

    Before beginning the foot treatment, ensure all necessary products and tools are within reach. Prepare a comfortable area for the client to relax and soak their feet.

    2. Foot Soak

    Begin the treatment with a foot soak. Fill a basin with warm water and add in a product that is suitable for the foot soak. Epsom salt is a good choice for most clients, but you can also choose a targeted product to address specific needs.

    Have the client soak their feet for 10-15 minutes to soften the skin and make it easier for product absorption.

    3. Exfoliating Foot Scrub

    After soaking, gently dry the client’s feet with a towel. You may want to leave the feet slightly damp depending on the exfoliant you’ve selected.

    Next, it’s time for exfoliation. Apply a physical scrub such as the Coconut Sugar Scrub to the feet and gently massage in circular motions, focusing on rough areas.     Ensure to be gentle and avoid over-buffing to prevent irritation.

    5. Paraffin Wax Treatment

    After callus removal, you can move onto the paraffin wax treatment. Start by melting the paraffin wax in a paraffin bath until it reaches a liquid state.

    Carefully dip the client’s feet into the warm wax, coating them evenly. Allow the wax to harden slightly before wrapping the feet in plastic wrap or a plastic bag. Cover with a warm towel and let sit for 15-20 minutes. Remove the wax by peeling it off gently.

    6. Moisturize The Feet

    With the warmth of summer inviting us outdoors, many aim to achieve that sought-after bronzed look. But amidst plans for beach days and picnics, a crucial question arises: Does sunscreen stop you from tanning? Let’s take a moment to dive into what tanning really does to your skin and address the burning question as to whether or not sunscreen stops you from tanning. 

    What is Tanning?

    Tanning is your body’s natural defense against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When your skin is exposed to the sun, cells called melanocytes produce melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its color. This increase in melanin production causes your skin to darken or tan, which is essentially an attempt by your body to protect deeper layers of skin from UV damage. 

    The process is influenced by two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVB rays are particularly important in stimulating melanin production because they cause direct DNA damage. This triggers the skin to produce more melanin as a protective measure. UVA rays, meanwhile, penetrate deeper into the skin and can contribute to premature aging. That said, they also play a role in tanning by oxidizing existing melanin, which deepens the tan color.

    Natural skin color variations, which range from light to dark, are due to genetic differences in melanocyte size and the number, size and shape of melanosomes (the structures within melanocytes that store and transport melanin). Those with darker skin have more melanin, which provides greater natural protection against UV radiation, while those with lighter skin have less melanin and are more susceptible to UV damage.

    Overall, while tanning can give your skin a healthy-looking glow, it’s important to remember that it’s a sign of skin responding to potential harm. Regular use of sunscreen can help protect your skin from UV damage, reducing the risk of skin cancer and the visible signs of premature aging.

    How Does Sunscreen Actually Work?

    Sunscreen acts as a barrier between your skin and the sun’s harmful UV rays. There are two main types of sunscreen: chemical and physical. The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. Physical sunscreens, on the other hand, contain minerals like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide that reflect and scatter UV radiation away from the skin. Both types help prevent the skin from absorbing harmful UV rays, thereby protecting against sunburn and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

    Is It Possible to Get a Tan with Sunscreen On?

    Yes, it is possible to tan even when wearing sunscreen. No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays — SPF 30, for instance, blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. Therefore, a small amount of UV radiation can still reach the skin, leading to tanning. The degree of tanning depends on the sunscreen’s SPF, the amount applied and how often it is reapplied, as well as your natural propensity to tan.

    Although these percentages seem high, they still allow a small amount of UV radiation to reach your skin.

    Why Tanning Still Occurs

    Even with high SPF sunscreen, some UV rays will penetrate the skin, triggering melanin production — the process that causes tanning. The amount of UV exposure that leads to tanning depends on several factors:

    Reapplication Frequency: Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating, to maintain its effectiveness.
    Time Spent Outdoors: Longer exposure increases the chance of UV rays penetrating the sunscreen barrier.
    Skin Tone: Individuals with fair skin are more likely to burn, while those with darker skin tan more easily. All skin types can tan and burn, and they all need protection from UV rays​.
    SPF Level: Higher SPF provides more protection, reducing the amount of UV radiation that reaches the skin. Lower SPF means more UV exposure and, potentially, a deeper tan.
    Reapplication: Sunscreen isn’t a one-and-done solution. It needs to be reapplied regularly, especially after swimming, sweating or towel drying, to maintain its protective effect. You want to cover all exposed skin, including often-missed areas like the ears, back of the neck and the tops of the feet.

    Other Factors Influencing Tanning

    In addition to the SPF level and proper application of sunscreen, several other factors can influence how much you tan. The time of day and geographical location play significant roles in UV exposure. UV radiation is strongest between 10am and 4pm, and it’s more intense at higher altitudes and closer to the equator. During these times and in these places, even with sunscreen, your skin is more likely to tan.

    The condition of your skin also matters. Dry, flaky skin can result in uneven tanning because it doesn’t absorb sunscreen as effectively, leaving some areas more exposed than others. Regular exfoliation can help ensure an even application of sunscreen and a more uniform tan. Moreover, certain medications and skin care products can increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays, making it more prone to tanning and burning, even with sunscreen. Always check the labels of any skin care products you use and consult with a healthcare professional if you’re unsure about their effects on sun sensitivity.

    Lastly, the type of activities you engage in while outdoors can affect your tan. Activities that cause you to sweat or spend time in water, such as playing sports or swimming, can wash away sunscreen more quickly. This makes reapplying sunscreen even more crucial to maintain protection and prevent uneven tanning.

    Sunscreen is essential for protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation, but it does not completely stop the skin from tanning. By using sunscreen, you can reduce the amount of UV exposure and minimize the risk of skin damage while still achieving a light tan. Remember, the key to a healthy tan is moderation and sun protection, so always choose a sunscreen with an appropriate SPF for your skin type and reapply it regularly during sun exposure.     What Is Dermaplaning? 

    Also known as “microplaning” or “blading,” dermablading is a professional skin care treatment that skims the face with an exfoliating blade, specifically created for use on the skin. The process removes dead skin, product build-up and the vellus hairs (also known as peach fuzz) found on the cheeks and chin. After, you should notice and feel rejuvenated and smooth skin on the face. 

    Eminence Organics Regional Sales & Education Representative Tamara Hughes says mistaking dermaplaning for shaving is a common error. “A dermaplaning treatment and shaving at home are completely different and use different tools to achieve different goals,” she says. “Although they both use a blade that moves across the skin, this is about all they have in common.” 

    “Despite the amount of at-home blades available,” says Hughes, “Dermaplaning should always be done by a certified dermaplaning technician.”

    How To Avoid Dermaplaning Regret

    You may be wondering whether dermaplaning is “bad” for your skin. According to Healthline.com, dermaplaning can:

    Minimize the appearance of acne scarring, pockmarks and fine lines.
    Give you a smooth and radiant complexion after the treatment
    Allow makeup to be applied and removed more easily as it has a smoother canvas. Even skin care products can be applied more easily, with some believing the product absorbs into the skin better. 

    Unlike laser hair removal and other cosmetic treatments, there is little to no recovery time other than making sure you apply sunscreen and watching how much time you spend in the sun. As dermaplaning only affects the top few layers of skin, it is considered a minimally invasive treatment, involving less risk than other treatments. According to Hughes, freshly dermaplaned skin can be perfect to enhance the results of chemical peel treatments, facials and microneedling. 

    Is dermaplaning safe to do at home? No! Always go to a spa to do this treatment, don’t try to do it at home. In terms of the results, they last about three weeks and, because your skin is in a fragile state, your skin is at risk of sun damage in the days following. Because of the skin’s fragility, you should avoid using retinol or tingly skin care products for a few weeks following the treatment. Those with some skin conditions (see below) shouldn’t attempt dermaplaning treatments.  

    Why Dermaplaning Should Only Be Done By An Esthetician

    According to Hughes, dermaplaning is typically performed by a certified technician. This is because dermaplaning is a professional treatment and removes two to three weeks of dead skin cells as well as vellus hair. She explains the difference between professional dermaplaning and using a razor at home: “In the treatment, they use a surgical blade at a 45-degree angle for the main purpose of exfoliation. In comparison, facial razors are tools that feature a safety guard and sit on the skin at a 35-degree angle and were designed to be used at home. Its main purpose is hair removal and ONLY removes the hair on the surface of the skin.”

    Who Benefits From Dermaplaning? 

    Every skin type could respond well to dermaplaning, and the practice can be particularly beneficial for those with:

    Acne scars and pock marks
    Dull skin
    Dry skin
    Sun-damaged skin
    Fine wrinkles
    Concerns about their vellus hair, which can thicken naturally due to age or conditions such as polycystic ovaries. 

    Who Should Avoid Dermaplaning? 

    According to WebMD and Healthline.com, you should avoid dermaplaning if you’ve recently experienced or regularly experience:

    Severe sunburn
    Active breakouts
    Sensitive skin
    Accutane or tretinoin application in the past 6 months
    Cancer, and are undergoing cancer treatment
    Keloids 
    Eczema
    Rosacea
    Spider veins
    Cystic acne
    Hirsutism
    Viruses such as chicken pox or shingles

    Common Dermaplaning Regrets

    Dermaplaning Regret #1: You “wing it” and try it at home

    It’s not hard to find an at-home dermaplaning blade but just because you can try a dermaplaning facial treatment on yourself, doesn’t mean you should. 

    “Dermaplaning should always be done by a certified dermaplaning technician in order to avoid injury and adverse reactions,” Hughes says. “You will want to make sure that you research certified technicians that were trained with proper techniques. Make sure to read the reviews and discuss the treatment with them before you start.”

    Without the proper training, sanitizing knowledge, or knowing how to angle the tool, you’re at risk of damaging the delicate skin on your face, which may prompt an infection, irritation, scratches or even scarring. 

    YouTuber Natalies Outlet mentions her own bad experience after dermaplaning with an old blade, describing the results as feeling like “ingrown hairs.” “I had bumps for months,” she says in her video.

    Dermaplaning Regret #2: Your Breakouts Worsen 

    According to the Cleveland Clinic, the sliding motion of dermaplaning can make breakouts worse by spreading bacteria around. In time, this can even cause more breakouts and agitate existing acne. We always recommend avoiding dermaplaning if you’re living with acne, active breakouts or using acne treatments like Accutane or Isotretinoin. However, if you think your skin is clear enough to attempt the practice, ensure you’re working with a professional to keep dermaplaning tools far away from any broken skin or blemishes.

    Dermaplaning Regret #3: Dermaplaning Irritates Your Skin 

    Although you might be impressed with an initial feeling of smoothness, a few hours later, your skin can feel tight and scraped if dermaplaning has worked a little harder then your sensitive skin would prefer. We always recommend talking to your dermaplaning professional or dermatologist before the treatment to discuss whether it’s right for you. 

    However, if your skin only occasionally suffers from sensitivity, consider an oil planning treatment that applies a layer of facial oil to the skin before dermaplaning to reduce any friction. And always remember, your treatment should be slow, careful and very light on the skin to avoid scratches and irritation.

    Dermaplaning Regret #4: It Reignites An Old Cold Sore

    Unfortunately, dermaplaning the wrong area can awaken an old cold sore site, reactivating the herpes simplex virus on the skin. To avoid this, visit a doctor to secure an oral anti-herpes medication or antibiotic to prevent any outbreaks, and always let your skin specialist know about your cold sore history prior to your treatment. 

    Dermaplaning Regret #5: Neglecting Your Skin After Treatment 

    As dermaplaning has removed a layer of older skin to expose a new one, a restorative routine is necessary in the weeks following your treatment. According to SELF.com, the skin cells in the epidermis take about 14 days to turn over, so follow your dermaplaning facial treatment with a routine that replenishes the skin barrier to maintain smooth, healthy skin in the long term. 

    This means a focus on:

    Hydrating serums and hyaluronic acids to add moisture to the skin
    Moisturizing in the weeks following the treatment
