Renée’s Expert Advice On Changing Your Routine For Fall

As the seasons change, so should our skincare routines. While fall brings so many wonderful changes, like cooler weather, changing foliage, bonfires, and pumpkin-flavored everything, it isn’t always the kindest on our skin. Problems like dry and dehydrated skin (here’s the difference), increased sensitivity, eczema and psoriasis flare-ups, textured skin, and hyperpigmentation are all common skin concerns this time of year. Because of this, many of the skincare products that work so well for us in the summer may not provide the same benefits in the cooler weather.

The girls at Renee Rouleau Skincare are just like everyone else when it comes to experiencing seasonal skin changes, which is why I decided to hear from them about which concerns they face every fall. Here’s a look into what they had to say– and what I suggest for addressing them!

    Lexi: In-House Esthetician

    Dryness under the Eyes

Lexi (Skin Type 6) may spend her days answering your skincare questions over chat, email, and My Skin Rx virtual consultations, but even the most well-versed skincare professionals face their share of seasonal skin changes. For Lexi, this comes in the form of extreme dryness, especially in the under-eye area. This is generally due to a combination of factors. As the air gets a little dryer, fall allergies start to affect many people, oftentimes causing puffy eyes. This puffiness stretches the skin tissue under the eyes, putting pressure on the skin’s natural barrier. Over time, this pressure can lead to tiny cracks that allow moisture to escape, exacerbating dryness.

One solution I suggest is gentle exfoliation under the eyes, like with Firm + Repair Overnight Serum. This helps to remove dead skin cells and allows better absorption of moisture. Following exfoliation, applying a hydrating eye cream, like Total Eye Repair Creme, can be beneficial in bringing moisture back to that area. Additionally, makeup can provide an added layer of protection. Foundation or concealer can provide one last defense to help moisture stay in the skin. Remember that moisturizers tend to evaporate throughout the day, so layering makeup on top can help retain that valuable moisture!

    Ella: Senior Content Editor

    Irritable Skin

With holidays just around the corner, this is the time of the year when you most want to have your skin under control for that special family gathering, work event, or New Year’s kiss– but your skin might have other things in mind. Ella (Skin Type 3), like many others, experiences more irritable skin in the fall, including redness and sensitivity. This could be due to several factors, but a significant one is the drop in humidity levels during the fall season. When the air is drier, the skin has a harder time retaining moisture, which can lead to compromised skin barriers and increased irritation.

For those with easily irritated skin like Ella, this dry air doesn’t help matters. The skin becomes more compromised, moisture escapes, and cracks can form, making the skin feel more sensitive and irritable. To address this issue, I recommend switching to products that provide comfort and hydration, like Phytolipid Comfort Creme and Redness Care Firming Serum.

    Jill: Marketing Coordinator

    Textured Skin

Have you ever experienced those little bumps on your skin, different from your usual breakouts? This is something that Jill (Skin Type 5) occasionally deals with once summer is over– after all, breakouts are most common in fall. The reason behind this issue is that layers of dead cells build up on the surface of the skin. These dead cells trap oil (and bacteria) beneath the surface. The trapped oil and bacteria block oxygen from getting into the pore. From there, C. acnes bacteria thrive, and breakouts happen.

To combat textured skin, especially in the fall, it’s essential to up your exfoliation game. When your skin produces more oil in the summer due to humidity, it becomes accustomed to this level of oil. However, when the air cools, the skin continues to produce oil but does not release it as rapidly, leading to trapped oil in the pores and those pesky bumps. To tackle this, it’s best to incorporate a physical exfoliant like Triple Berry Smoothing Scrub into your routine, using it twice a week to keep your skin smooth and bump-free.

Lizziee: New Product Development Project Manager

    Seasonal Eczema

Eczema is a common skin concern that can flare up year-round, but for some, like Lizziee (Skin Type 6), it becomes more prevalent as the weather turns cold. This is because those with eczema are genetically more susceptible to inflamed, dry, and irritated skin. While everyone’s skin is different, there are a few common triggers for flare-ups, including cold, dry weather, intense heat or humidity, allergens like dust mites or pollen, harsh soaps, and rough clothing materials like wool.

Since eczema is characterized by chronic inflammation, the primary goal should be to support your moisture barrier and keep the skin calm. For Lizziee, I recommend using a cleanser free of sulfates. Look for a hydrating gel or cream cleanser, like Vitamin-Infused Cleansing Emulsion. These types of cleansers are gentle on the skin and can help maintain the skin’s moisture balance while avoiding potential irritants.

    Kacie: Purchasing Manager

    Hyperpigmentation

As summer comes to a close, Kacie (Skin Type 6) and many others are starting to notice the harsh effects that the countless days of sun exposure had on their skin. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Kacie for quite some time (almost 8 years, to be exact!) and if there’s one thing I know about her, it’s that she’s diligent about wearing sunscreen. However, we live in Austin– meaning it’s nearly impossible to escape the scorching Texas sun. This is why it’s no surprise that her pigment cells tend to flare up, and in her case, it comes in the form of melasma (one of the four types of hyperpigmentation).

To tackle hyperpigmentation, I recommend a three-pronged approach. First, exfoliate and dissolve dead skin cells with products like Triple Berry Smoothing Peel and Scrub. This helps to reveal fresher, more even-toned skin. Second, fade and brighten those spots with products containing melanin-suppressing ingredients, like Vitamin C&E Treatment. Lastly, protect your skin from further damage by regularly applying sunscreen, which is vital for preventing the worsening of existing hyperpigmentation.

Ultimately, fall brings unique skincare challenges, and it’s crucial to adapt our routines accordingly. By understanding the unique concerns of our skin and giving it the thoughtful attention it deserves, we can all enjoy healthier and more radiant skin throughout the season.

Next up, how to get rid of sun spots from summer in 7 steps.

  • Gua Sha For The Face And Neck

Gua Sha For The Face And Neck

Let’s face it, you’ve been hearing about gua sha a lot over the past couple of years and it looks like the ancient practice is here to stay. Search “gua sha” on TikTok and you’ll be flooded with impressive before-and-after videos showing off the transformative results of this tiny tool. A gua sha routine is said to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce inflammation and sculpt the face (hello, cheekbones). It can also help relieve the tension and stiffness that occur from prolonged use of technology (aka “tech neck”). Read on to discover our gua sha guide for the face and neck, and learn from our Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar as she walks you through the proper gua sha technique.

What Is Gua Sha? | Does Gua Sha Work? | Benefits Of Gua Sha For The Face And Neck | Gua Sha Techniques | Recommended Products

    What Is Gua Sha?

Gua sha delivers impressive sculpting and tension-relieving results at a budget-friendly price point. While it may seem new to many of us, gua sha dates back to the Paleolithic Age and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Now widely recognized for its beauty benefits, the practice of gua sha began as a full body treatment for illness, disease and acupuncture therapy, where a flat stone (or other tool like a coin or spoon) was used to scrape across the skin to relieve pain and inflammation by bringing bloodflow to the area.

Traditionally, the gua sha tool was made from jade or bian stone, but, given the tool’s immense popularity, there are now varieties ranging from rose quartz to stainless steel. According to Byrdie, it’s important to consider the shape of the gua sha, as it should be comfortable to grip and complement the natural contours of the face. Look for one with multiple angles and divots to allow for smooth gliding along the neck, jawline, cheekbones and under the eyes.

    Does Gua Sha Actually Work?

With all of this history and current viral status, does the gua sha actually live up to the hype? We certainly think so. As well as its skin-smoothing benefits, it is lauded as a holistic practice that encourages relaxation, reduces stress and releases tension in the body. As with most skin care habits, consistency is key to achieving the best results. Experts recommend starting your gua sha routine with two to three days a week and eventually working up to every day.

A study published in the Journal of Science and Healing suggests that gua sha can increase microcirculation in the skin by up to 400%, which results in a healthy, youthful-looking glow. Another clinical trial published by PubMed demonstrated positive causation when combining facial massage and “anti-aging cream.” In this trial, 22 women applied a commercial anti-aging cream, followed with the daily use of a massaging device. At the end of the eight-week period, wrinkles appeared visibly smoother and the beneficial effects of the cream were amplified. Dermatologist (and YouTuber) Dr. Dray shares her professional opinion on gua sha and goes into detail about the clinical study mentioned above. As always, it’s important to begin any new skin care practice with realistic expectations!

Benefits Of Gua Sha For The Face And Neck

What are the benefits of gua sha? According to Sandra Lanshin Chiu, an acupuncturist and owner of Lanshin, a holistic healing studio in New York, gua sha is effective for all skin types and concerns, including acne. “Congested skin is stagnated — meaning circulation of fluid and blood is sluggish, causing the skin to be more susceptible to swelling and inflammation. Facial gua sha not only helps lymphatic circulation (and thus drainage), it also improves the quality of blood circulation and energy (‵qi′) circulation.”

Other benefits of gua sha include:

    Sculpting and contouring the face
    Improving product absorption
    Relaxing muscles and releasing tension
    Improving circulation
    Reducing puffiness

According to Lanshin’s team of experts, focusing on the neck is essential to any gua sha routine because it acts as a “pathway that shuttles vital nutrients up to feed your head and face, as well as circulates wastes down and out.” The hours spent each day on our phones and computers can contribute to tension that impacts how the neck functions. “Gua sha helps relieve muscle and tissue tension, allowing our bodies to return to optimal function. Increased circulation of blood, vital fluids and life force energy can then be returned to your skin and tissues. When done properly and regularly, this can lessen the appearance of the signs of ‵aging′ so many dread.”

Gua Sha Techniques For The Face And Neck

For a video demonstration of gua sha techniques, view this In The Mix video with Natalie:

Natalie shares a step-by-step guide on how to gua sha your face and neck for best results:

Apply 4 –10 drops of your preferred facial oil.
Starting at the base of your neck, gently glide the tool upwards towards the jawline on both sides.
Next, sweep outwards working from the middle of your chin towards the ear.
After this, sweep across the cheeks finishing at the hairline.
Sweep over your eyebrow and up towards your hairline.
Sweep from between the eyebrows up to the hairline.
Finally, sweep upwards from the middle of your forehead to the hairline.
Repeat on the other side of your face.
Sweep each area between 3 – 10 times before moving to the next part of the face.
Finally, sweep the tool from the top of your jaw (under your ear) on each side down to the collarbone. This will allow the lymphatic fluid to drain.

Products To Use For Gua Sha

Prep the skin with either a serum, oil or moisturizer that provides enough slip for the gua sha tool to glide easily over the skin. You want to avoid tugging at the skin, as this can cause unwanted redness and irritation. If you find that happening, add a few more drops of your desired product. We recommend our beloved Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil and the Monoi Age Corrective Night Cream For Face & Neck for your gua sha routine.

    Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil

The Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil is our ultra-hydrating face oil that works to protect the skin against drying environmental pollutants, improve the appearance of elasticity and smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This award-winning product contains skin-loving ingredients like seabuckthorn oil, rosehip oil and jojoba oil to improve the look of dryness and reveal a glowy, youthful-looking appearance. If you do feel the product absorbing too quickly as you work on different areas of the face, try spritzing one of our facial mists to rehydrate the skin.

Rosehip Oil & Gua Sha Gift Set

Surprise a loved one (or pamper yourself) this holiday season with the limited edition Rosehip Oil & Gua Sha Gift Set, which includes a full-size bottle of Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil and a gua sha tool. Made from natural aventurine, each Eminence Organics gua sha tool has its own unique shade, markings and beauty. This duo is designed to deliver a relaxing home facial massage that leaves skin feeling soft, plump and invigorated.

Monoi Age Corrective Night Cream For Face & Neck

The Monoi Age Corrective Night Cream For Face & Neck is one of our richer moisturizing creams. This formula works best for drier skin types given its deeply hydrating ingredients like evening primrose oil, shea butter and our Argan Stem Cell Complex. You can also pair the cream with one of our toners for additional hydration and slip when using your gua sha.

We recommend the Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist, a skin-plumping toner formulated with a Natural Retinol Alternative, swiss green apple and coconut water, perfectly suited for all skin types. This mist has a five-star rating on our website and has even found its way into Olivia Culpo’s nighttime skin care routine featured in Harper’s Bazaar. Using your gua sha tool after applying the cream and toner will help the products’ active ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin for maximum line-smoothing results.

10 of the Very Best Anti-Aging Ingredients in Skincare

I’ve always said that growing older is a privilege, and I truly believe that! There are so many wonderful things that come with age, like wisdom, confidence, and experience. That said, there are other things that come with age that aren’t so wonderful—like changes in the skin, for instance.

Over time, signs of aging like lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and loss of tone can become apparent. And while these things are normal and highly common, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to slow down their progression and minimize their appearance.

In this post, I’ll share 10 of the best anti-aging ingredients in skincare. As a product formulator and esthetician with over 30 years of experience, I can confidently say that these ingredients are capable of creating real change in the skin. They’re what I recommend using to encourage and maintain more youthful-looking skin.

The 10 Best Anti-Aging Ingredients in Skincare

    1. Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a form of niacin (vitamin B3). It’s a very effective anti-aging ingredient, as it can brighten the skin, minimize the appearance of pores, and boost collagen production. It can even stimulate microcirculation in the dermis in concentrations as low as 0.5% to address the dullness that can come with age. Most ingredients that boost circulation tend to have a high potential for irritation, but niacinamide is unique in that the risk for irritation is very low.

It even has antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from photoaging (AKA the breakdown of collagen caused by damaging UV rays). If you’re using this ingredient to address signs of aging, I suggest looking for products that contain niacinamide in concentrations closer to 5%. (Read more about the benefits of niacinamide.)

    2. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

AHAs, which include glycolic and lactic acids, are helpful in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, and age spots. They’re able to do all of these things through exfoliation—AKA lowering the pH level of our skin to dissolve the bonds or “glue” that hold dead skin cells together. This allows for expired cells to be shed and fresh, live cells to be revealed. (Learn more about how exfoliating acids work).

The favored AHA is glycolic acid, because it has the smallest molecular structure, and can penetrate deepest into the skin. Lactic acid, on the other hand, can’t penetrate as deep but is gentler and more hydrating. Generally speaking, though, AHAs are more effective in higher concentrations, which is why I recommend using them in a serum format.

Note: Using exfoliating acids too often can lead to irritation, which then triggers an aging and inflammation response. Make sure you’re not overdoing it! Find out how often you should really be exfoliating.

    3. Vitamin C

I believe vitamin C is one of the best preventative aging ingredients out there, as it’s one of the most extensively researched antioxidants in skincare, and it’s found to be extremely effective in interfering with damaging free radicals. I recommend wearing it daily under moisturizer and sunscreen. Not only will it give your skin a daily dose of anti-aging power, but it can also help with discoloration and brown spots. It’s truly a win-win.

The most important thing when dealing with vitamin C is stability. This ingredient is notorious for oxidizing quickly (which is why it’s so common for vitamin C serums to turn brown. Once it has oxidized, it loses efficacy and can actually cause more harm than good, causing irritation and blackheads. That’s why using a well-formulated vitamin C serum in opaque, airless packaging is key. (Check out the five most important things to look for in a vitamin C serum.)

    4. Sodium Hyaluronate

I always say that skin cells are like fish in that they need water to survive. Beyond that, water is essential for making the skin look plump and youthful. So, how can you boost water levels in your skin? It’s easy—try using sodium hyaluronate.

Sodium hyaluronate, which is the salt form of hyaluronic acid, helps recharge the skin’s moisture levels by attracting and binding water in the skin. It’s generally used more often than hyaluronic acid because of its heightened ability to penetrate the skin. And thanks to its salt form, it’s also less likely to oxidize, meaning it’s a more stable ingredient than hyaluronic acid.

The important thing with sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid is that you apply an occlusive afterward to lock moisture into your skin. This will prevent something called transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which happens when the dry air pulls water from the skin. That’s why I always recommend following a hydrating serum with a moisturizer!

Renée Rouleau Products: Skin Drink Concentrate and Moisture Infusion Toner

    5. Peptides

Peptides help build and protect collagen and elastin, which are two major components of the skin that keep it firm and tight. Chemically speaking, peptides are part of larger protein molecules, and they work by communicating with and directing skin cells to thicken the support structure of the skin. Interestingly enough, different types of peptides influence different types of cells. That’s why I formulate my products with a mix of different peptides, such as dipeptide-2, palmitoyl oligopeptide, palmitoyl hexapeptide-12, and palmitoyl tripeptide-38.

Renée Rouleau Products: Hydraboost Rescue Creme and Intensive Firming Neck Creme

    6. Resveratrol

This anti-aging ingredient is extracted from the skin of red grapes, blueberries, cranberries, goji berries, and pomegranates. Research shows that these fruits have incredible antioxidant content, which is why consuming them on a regular basis can help your body defend against aging free radicals. When used topically in well-formulated products, these fruits offer powerful anti-aging benefits and skin protective properties.

    7. Marine Algae Extracts

Researchers believe this ingredient to be an immune system enhancer. It’s also an exceptional moisturizer, offering soothing and strengthening benefits for environmentally-stressed skin. In nature, marine algae are constantly being exposed to extreme conditions. Over time, these plants have developed defense systems against the elements that can be beneficial when applied to the skin.

Clinical studies show using marine algae extracts can improve everything from hydration levels to skin firmness, strength, and elasticity. Not only that, but this anti-aging ingredient can offer long-lasting skin softness. It’s a true multitasking skincare ingredient, which is why I chose to formulate so many products in my skincare line with it.

Renée Rouleau Products: Firm + Repair Overnight Serum and Redness Care Firming Serum

    8. Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10)

Co Q10 (or ubiquinone) increases the accessibility of cellular fuel. Translation? It helps provide energy to cells and facilitates the building of new tissues. Unfortunately, as we age, the amount of usable Co Q10 diminishes and the metabolism of the cells slows down. This ingredient positively influences cellular metabolism and enables us to combat signs of aging starting at the cellular level. The topical application of Co Q10 is extremely beneficial, especially for dull, sluggish skin. It plays a key role in keeping skin looking youthful, healthy, and vibrant.

    9. Retinol

The purest form of vitamin A, retinol is a cell-communicating ingredient and antioxidant that stimulates collagen, activates cellular metabolism to encourage faster turnover, fades dark spots and discoloration, and improves skin firmness. While it’s certainly not a quick fix, when used long-term, it can give remarkable results. Simply put, it’s an anti-aging powerhouse.

Renée Rouleau Products: Advanced Resurfacing Serum

    10. Astaxanthin

The final anti-aging ingredient I want to talk about is astaxanthin. This is the most powerful member of the carotenoid antioxidant family. It provides powerful protection against lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage from free radicals. On a visible level, it can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and encourage smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

Renée Rouleau Products: Pro Remedy Oil and Glow Enhancing Creme

There you have it. While there are many amazing anti-aging ingredients available on the skincare market today, these are 10 of my favorite ones. I hope this sheds some light on specific ingredients and how they can create positive change in the skin.

Spa Treatments To Get Your Clients’ Skin Ready For Fall

Fall is upon us, which means that sunny beach days and long night dining al fresco have been replaced by more structured routines, cozy sweaters and, possibly, some new habits. Being back on a schedule is a good thing, especially when it comes to self-care. Read on to find out which treatments will help your Clients replenish, refresh and pamper their post-summer skin.

Facials | Exfoliation | Body Wraps | Massages | Finishing Touches And Home Care

    Seasonal Skin Care Transition

A long summer of travel, fun at the beach and late nights by the campfire may be in the rearview mirror, but the evidence is still front and center on your Clients’ skin. Months of sun, chlorine, salt water (and maybe a few cocktails) may have stripped away moisture, and recent temperature fluctutations are no doubt causing some issues. Clients could use some major replenishing from head to toe.

Curb the wear and tear summer has had on your Clients’ skin with exfoliating and hydrating treatments that will help restore glow to dull skin and top up the lost moisture reserves. Guide your Clients through this transition and help them repair from the summer damage while preparing for the onslaught of fall and winter.

    Facials

Let’s face it: There is never a bad time to get a facial. Clients can reap the benefits of a deep cleansing or restorative treatment all year round. And while many types of facials are pretty seasonally fluid, there are definitely a few facial treatments to lean into and others to avoid this time of year.

Some facials are a no-go in the summer because they can make skin especially sensitive to harmful UV rays. There is a risk that sun exposure on freshly lasered or chemically peeled skin can cause pigment damage (hyperpigmentation), increased inflammation and additional complications. But come fall, the skin is ready for a good peel and some hydration.

As summer turns to autumn, the combination of cold and rainy weather outside and hot air being circulated indoors can create the perfect storm of skin issues. If the summer fun dried out your Clients’ skin, expect the mixed bag of autumn temperatures to further dehydrate the complexion and make it look dull, patchy and parched. Fall is actually an ideal time for a peel for a few reasons. That post-summer glow fades quickly, leaving behind a tired complexion in need of some moisture. Gentle exfoliation in the form of a peel encourages faster cell turnover, which gently breaks down the glue that holds dead skin right where you don’t want it.

The Yam & Pumpkin Pro Enzyme Peel 20% leans right into the fall theme. Yam pulp purée — which is high in beta carotene and vitamins to fight the signs of aging — plays well with its fall counterpart, pumpkin — which is rich in smoothing enzymes, amino acids and antioxidants. With additional exfoliating power from glycolic acid, lactic acid and enzymes from papaya and pineapples, this peel is a powerhouse that can reduce the appearance of dark spots, fine lines and sun damage — leaving skin looking firm and radiant. And if your Clients love the results, send them home with the Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel 5% so they can continue the natural exfoliation between spa visits.

    Exfoliation

And while we’re on the theme, exfoliation is a great way to replenish the post-summer skin from head to toe. Excessive hours in the sun, sand and surf can do a number on the texture and hydration levels all over the body, but exfoliating skin can do wonders as we head into fall. A thorough scrub gets rid of the lingering dead skin cells to reveal fresher, smoother-looking skin. A beneficial treatment on its own, a body exfoliation is also a great add-on before another treatment, like a body wrap.

A professional scrub is great way to say goodbye to rough, dry summer-ravaged skin. And since we’re all about fall right now, our Cranberry Pomegranate Sugar Scrub creates the perfect mood for the season. Cranberry is high in vitamins and antioxidants, as are other ingredients like pomegranate and green tea. Our Stone Crop Revitalizing Body Scrub is another great option this season. Comforting stone crop paired with antioxidant-rich lemon peel works in tandem to brighten and smooth the skin. Follow with a wrap, massage, shower and a soothing moisturizer and your Client will leave with a major glow.

    Body Wraps

Body wraps are great any time of year, but there is something extra special about being wrapped up and left under a heated blanket in the fall. Benefits to Clients can range from increasing circulation to the area to flushing out extra water weight and fluids, tightening the skin and firming the texture.

Eminence Organic Skin Care herbal body wraps are designed to heal dryness, detox and tighten the skin all over. The Paprika Herbal Treatment contains the spice, plus a safe amount of stinging nettle, to help energize the appearance of skin for a healthy-looking glow. This zippy wrap also contains honey to nourish and hydrate. Another spicy option is the Herbal Cellulite Treatment. Like the paprika treatment, this rejuvenating and toning body wrap makes the skin feel warm and results in a rosy glow.

For a real treat, the Chocolate Truffle Body Wrap is an irresistibly delicious option with lots of benefits. This wrap tightens and tones the look of crepey, wrinkled skin, making it an ideal choice for addressing signs of too much sun in summers past. Plus, cocoa is high in antioxidants, while almond, jojoba and macadamia nut oils soften and hydrate.

    Massages

Expanding on the cozy theme, nothing feels better on a cool autumn day than a relaxing massage. Whether it’s deep tissue, Swedish, lymphatic drainage or a warming hot stone massage, autumn is a good time to encourage Clients to take some time for themselves during these hectic days of the season.

For the best slip and glide, our Product Support Team recommends the Apricot Body Oil, which contains apricot kernel, grape seed and jojoba oils, which help make the skin feel incredibly soft and smooth. Apricot kernel oil is high in Vitamins A, C and E, and both grape seed and jojoba are incredibly nourishing and hydrating.

Another Eminence Organics oil that is perfect for massage is the Stone Crop Body Oil, which is formulated with arnica and oils from stone crop, rosehip and avocado to moisturize. Spa Professional Lindsay O. left a website review singing the praises of this oil, writing: “I have been using the Stone Crop Oil in my massage treatment room … and I have to say it’s fantastic! It’s a great medium for deep tissue massage as you need very little, do not have to reapply and it smells fresh! Something we noticed is that the arnica is an added bonus for recovering after receiving a deep tissue massage!”

    Finishing Touches And Home Care

Don’t let your Clients forget that sunscreen is a non-negotiable in their routine, even on cloudy fall days. Our Radiant Protection SPF Fluid is a moisturizing all-mineral fluid and contains bakuchiol, a gentle alternative to conventional retinol. Make sure to send them home with samples to try it out, or suggest another option like the Lilikoi Daily Defense Moisturizer SPF 40 which does double duty and works well for all skin types.

Encourage Clients to continue the self-care beyond the treatment room with a selection of Eminence products that they can use at home to keep their results going between visits.

And if you’re looking to get some pampering this fall, make an appointment with your nearest Eminence Organics Spa Partner.

  • The Benefits Of Sunscreen: Why Do I Need To Wear SPF Every Day?

The Benefits Of Sunscreen: Why Do I Need To Wear SPF Every Day?

Suncreen. It protects us from sun damage, reduces our risk of skin cancer, prevents the early onset of wrinkles and starts to work within minutes of application. In other words, it’s one of the most effective beauty products around. Most of us already know the importance of SPF during the summer when the sun is shining down on us. But if you want to keep your skin looking radiant and healthy, you actually need to wear sunscreen every single day. Here are the reasons why:

Why Do I Need SPF? The Benefits Of Sunscreen

    1. Reduces Your Risk of Skin Cancer

Sunscreen protects your skin and reduces your risk of developing skin cancer and skin pre-cancers. Applying SPF in conjunction with other sun protection behaviors — like covering up in dark clothing and wearing a hat and sunglasses — reduces the harmful effects of sun exposure. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation claims that applying sunscreen with an SPF factor of 15 reduces your chance of developing squamous cell carcinoma by 40% and your melanoma risk (the deadliest skin cancer) by 50%.

    2. Protects Against Sunburn

Sunlight actually consists of two types of harmful rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays from the sun (and the same ones you get in tanning booths) are mainly linked to long-term skin damage like the formation of wrinkles, and are also associated with some skin cancers. It’s UVB rays, however, that are responsible for sunburn and are thought to cause most skin cancers. Not only are sunburns painful, they have a direct link to the most deadly types of cancer. According to Healthline: “Even a single sunburn can increase a person’s risk of skin cancer. This is because when the skin absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight, it can damage the genetic material in skin cells.” Thankfully, sunscreen defends the skin against UV rays by absorbing, reflecting or scattering sunlight.

    3. Helps Avoid Inflammation & Redness

Too much time in the sun will result in sunburn, severe skin reddening and inflammation of the skin. According to Medical News Today: “The ultraviolet rays from the sun damage the skin, which turns red as the body directs more blood to the affected area to repair the damage.”

    4. Prevents The Early Onset Of Wrinkles & Fine Lines

When it comes to developing wrinkles, fine lines and crow’s feet, one of the most effective preventative formulas is sunscreen. Lengthy exposure to UVA rays prematurely ages your skin and results in the loss of collagen and skin elasticity. In fact, up to 90% of visible signs of aging are caused by sun damage. By introducing SPF into your daily skin care routine, you’re warding off the early signs of aging with minimal effort.

    5. Helps Protect Against Blotchy Skin & Hyperpigmentation

Uneven skin pigmentation (or hyperpigmentation) refers to parts of the skin becoming discolored or darkening in an inconsistent way. This can be hereditary, but it can also be caused by sun exposure. Blotchy skin or dark spots may spring up on the face, hands and other parts of the body that are regularly exposed to the sun.

The good news? There is a simple way to avoid dark spots (as well as sunburn, wrinkles and skin cancer) — and the solution is wearing sunscreen rain or shine, not just in summer.

    6. Stops DNA Damage

Scientific studies have found that sunlight induces DNA damage and can trigger skin carcinogenesis and photoaging. Studies state: “Many of the deleterious human health effects that result from sunlight exposure are associated with a chain of events that begins with the formation of DNA damage. These lesions can lead to inflammatory and immunosuppressive processes in the epithelial tissue as well as accelerated aging and tumor development.”

Clearly, sun exposure can have a profound effect and potentially cause premature skin aging, skin cancer and many other skin changes. If you think you can avoid the sun’s rays in winter or by sitting in the office, you might be surprised to learn about these next situations when SPF is still a must:

5 Surprising Situations When You Need To Wear SPF

    1. Indoors

For those spending all day indoors, UVA light can still reach you by penetrating window glass. If your office is bright from sunlight streaming through the windows, you’re receiving a similar amount of UVA rays as you would be if you were outside.

    2. At High Altitudes

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVB rays can cause sun damage and sunburn even if you’ve chosen a skiing holiday over a week at the beach. Snow reflects up to 80% of the sun’s damaging rays, so next time you’re on the slopes, apply sunscreen to the exposed parts of your face to protect against the increased UV exposure from the reflection.

    3. During Winter

The ozone layer is the part of the atmosphere that absorbs the radiation from the sun. During the winter months, the ozone layer thins out, meaning you have less defense against the sun’s rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests applying SPF to your entire body before you get dressed. At a minimum, they recommend applying sunscreen to areas that aren’t covered by clothes, like your ears, neck, scalp, hands and your face (but you already knew that).

    4. On Cloudy Days

The Skin Cancer Foundation also states that even when it’s cloudy, up to 80% of the sun’s UV radiation reaches Earth. Unfortunately, that means outside activity on an overcast day (any season of the year) can still result in skin damage.

    5. Through Light Clothing

You would assume that all clothing protects us from sun damage, but some lightweight fabrics like silk, crepe or cotton tend to allow light through. Also, the lighter the color of the garment, the more likely sunlight will hit the skin. For example, a white cotton t-shirt only protects with the equivalency of SPF 5! For more protection, wear dark-colored, dense fabrics. Synthetic and semisynthetic fibers like polyester or rayon, plus heavy, tightly woven fabrics like wool, denim or corduroy, provide the most defense — though they may not be what you reach for on a sweltering summer day!

Watch Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar as she reveals her favorite all-mineral SPF moisturizers, perfect for daily use.

What SPF Is Best For Everyday Use?

When choosing a sunscreen, look for the phrase “broad spectrum.” This description signals that the formula protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Next, check the sun protection factor (SPF) number that rates the sunscreen’s effectiveness in blocking UV rays. For your best defense, select a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

Our all-mineral SPF sunscreens are formulated specifically for the face and neck. Each formula is free from silicones and brimming with natural, organic botanicals and active ingredients to deliver targeted skin benefits, all while helping you stay protected from sun damage, every day.
