How to Find the Right Amount of Balance With Your Food Choices

Balanced eating can seem like such an abstract concept — what does balance really mean and look like when it comes to food?

While balance will look different for each of us at every meal, there is one important takeaway to understand about finding and maintaining balance, and that’s what I’m sharing in this video.

    The Spectrum of Eating Habits

    Imagine a spectrum.

On one end of the spectrum, we have the all-in mentality of rigid diets, plans, and food rules that feel restrictive and require you to regulate yourself. This is the place where you eat “super clean” and avoid all “bad” foods.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is not paying attention to your nutritional needs.

Sometimes this can look like eating anything you want, whenever you want. This usually happens when someone believes that the best way to have balance is to never say no to foods that they previously labeled as “off-limits” or “bad.”

It can also look like not being mindful about ensuring you’re getting a balance of nutrients or not feeling confident in knowing what your body needs to be nourished without the guidance of being on a specific diet.

If you just let go of the diets but you don’t also learn how to focus on your nutritional needs in a more supportive and sustainable way, you eventually won’t feel well, you may get further from your well-nourished weight, or your physical health may suffer. And all of these things may lead you to feel pulled back to wanting to go on a diet, which swings you right back into the other end of the spectrum.

You need to nourish your body well in order for you to simply feel your best and also to care for your health and wellbeing.

Remember, nutrition is the catalyst for all areas of our health and it’s what allows us to enjoy and experience life. You deserve to find a way of nourishing yourself that supports you without it requiring you to regulate or restrict yourself.

    What Balanced Eating Looks Like

What we’re aiming for is a happy medium — balance.

What some people think when they hear happy medium is spending some time on one end of the spectrum and some time on the other end of the spectrum, swinging back and forth between the two.

An example of what this may sound like is you saying you’ve been “good” all week, so now you’re going to eat whatever you want all weekend.

Or it could be the reverse, where you say that you’ve been so “bad” all week, so next week you need to make up for what you ate and eat super clean.

But that’s not really balanced. That’s cycling between two extreme states.

Not only is that not supportive of your wellbeing, but it’s also not giving you a sense of ease, peace, and enjoyment with food that’s so important.

Rather than swinging from one end of the spectrum to the other, what balance really looks like is hovering right in the middle of the spectrum with a little give and take on a daily basis.

This is where you’re making very intentional choices that allow you to nourish yourself well without needing to restrict or regulate yourself, and also have the flexibility to enjoy foods you like without ignoring your nutritional needs.

Balance takes many forms and can look different for each person, every day, at every meal!

This can look like enjoying a slice of pizza with a side salad.

It can look like choosing to have dessert one night because you really want it, you have your favorite dessert on hand, and you’ve given your body the nourishment it needs.

It can look like opting to make a more nourishing version of your favorite comfort food so that you’re able to sneak in more whole foods into your day while also making it a meal that’s really enjoyable.

The purpose of finding balance with your food choices is to bring awareness to what you want and need, and make an intentional choice that helps keep you in the happy medium — no matter what it may look like.

This balance allows you to honor your wants and needs, build confidence in your ability to make the best choice for yourself, and experience much more ease and peace around food so it no longer is a source of stress or something that preoccupies your mental energy.

How to Find and Maintain Balance

In order to find this balance and stay in this happy medium rather than swinging from one end of the spectrum to the other, have to form new, more supportive practices and mindsets that allow you to hover in this middle, balanced state for the long-term.

If you’re curious about what those practices are, sign up for our free workshop. In it, I share the three important pillars to focus on in order to reclaim balance with the way you nourish yourself. You’ll walk away knowing what those pillars are and why they’re so important if you want to have this balance with your eating habits that give you the flexibility you need to feel at peace and at ease with food for life.

  • 6 Reasons To Add Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant To Your Routine

6 Reasons To Add Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant To Your Routine

Our Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant has earned its status as a skin care staple. Celebrated for its efficacy, this gentle rice-based exfoliator leaves your complexion looking more refined, bright and polished. Here are six reasons why beauty editors, celebrities and makeup artists call this a favorite — and why it should be a part of your routine.

6 Reasons To Add Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant To Your Routine

    1. Beauty Editor And Celebrity Reviews

Beauty experts test tons of products. Even with a bevy of other exfoliators to grab their attention, beauty experts agree that our Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant is the key to beautiful skin. Refinery29’s beauty editors call it the perfect pick to keep skin in tip-top shape between spa visits. Westworld star Thandiwe Newton also swears by it, saying: “Completely natural and organic, smells divine and is gentle enough (but properly effective) to use morning and night.” Celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff includes Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant in her skin care arsenal, revealing to NewBeauty that it is a must-have for her A-list clients.

    2. Made With Natural Ingredients

With the addition of water, Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant transforms into a creamy yet polishing paste that sloughs away dead cells and buffs the skin’s texture, revealing a smooth, flawless-looking complexion. This popular exfoliant is infused with natural ingredients that work together to cleanse and polish the skin. Strawberries containing salicylic acid gently exfoliate and remove impurities to brighten the skin and shrink the appearance of pores. Rhubarb, another key ingredient, is an excellent source of ascorbic acid and vitamins that minimize the visible signs of aging. Chickpea flour reduces the appearance of pores while lactic acid plus rice gently slough off dead skin cells to improve skin texture for a rejuvenated appearance.

    3. Dermascope Aestheticians’ Choice Award Winner

Over the years, the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant has won its share of awards. In 2021, over 73,000 votes were cast by licensed aestheticians and industry professionals, selecting our the exfoliant as “Favorite Exfoliating Scrub” at the Dermascope Aestheticians’ Choice Awards. It also won “Best Facial Exfoliator” at the Spa & Wellness Mexicaribe Product Awards in 2020 and “Best Exfoliating Products for Sensitive Skin” at The Zoe Report Awards in 2020. The accolades received by the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant from industry experts and professionals speak volumes about its quality and effectiveness. This widespread recognition leads us to delve into what makes it so special: the Dermafoliant’s innovative blend of both physical and chemical exfoliation methods.

    4. Uses Both Physical And Chemical Exfoliation

The acclaim garnered by the Dermafoliant is largely attributed to its distinctive formulation. This exfoliant uses both physical and chemical exfoliation to offer your skin a dual-action polish. The physical exfoliation is thanks to the inclusion of rice flour that buffs and smooths texture. Rice acts as a soft exfoliant, enhancing and refining skin texture, and effectively soaks up surplus oil. Additionally, adzuki flour plays a role in revitalizing and illuminating the skin, while oat flour offers hydrating benefits and contributes to a smoother skin appearance by eliminating surface dirt and impurities. At the same time, lactic and salicylic acids remove dead skin cells via chemical exfoliation, revealing flawless-looking skin. Lactic acid specifically hastens the exfoliation process, promoting the emergence of new skin cells for a glowy complexion. This formula also contains a Biocomplex2™, a booster of antioxidants, Coenzyme Q10 and alpha lipoic acid to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

    5. Multiple Ways To Exfoliate

Designed to activate when combined with water, the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant is what you call a powder-to-paste exfoliant. To use correctly, dispense a small amount of dry powder to your hand, add a few drops of water and rub your hands together. When you add water, you’ll see the texture transforming. You can either use it on its own as a paste or if you prefer, mix this in with a cleanser. It’s customizable and totally up to you!

    6. Naturally Scented

Beyond its adaptable application, the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant also stands out for its delicious natural fragrance. This daily-use cleansing exfoliant is infused with the enticing aroma of strawberries and rhubarb. Plus, strawberries are an excellent source of Vitamin C, flavonoids and ellagic acid which all combine to promote a radiant-looking appearance.

  • Skincare For Teens Is Trending– But What Does This Mean For Their Skin?

Skincare For Teens Is Trending– But What Does This Mean For Their Skin?

Between school, sports, extracurriculars, homework, and hanging out with friends, I’ve been amazed at the amount of time and effort that teenagers have been able to devote to maintaining an extensive skincare routine– at times maybe a bit too extensive. Thanks to TikTok, the rise in skincare routines amongst teens has been quickly trending upward. Not only is it great that there is a lot of education on how a teen should take care of their skin, but I also love the fun, feel-good aspect that it brings about.

I know this feeling all too well, as beauty and self-care have always been in my DNA, starting as far back as my time at my grandmother’s salon, Powder Puff Beauty Shoppe. I experienced beauty from early on and loved to experiment with beauty products whenever I had the chance (I was the first girl in my 5th-grade class to wear makeup!). When I was a teenager, I got really into skincare– and not the drug store kind. I used to “mail order” my skincare products from a line called Lange. This all goes to say, I knew who I was from a very young age.

When it comes to skincare, many believe that the younger you start, the better– but just how true is this? Let’s dive into what I think about this rising trend, both the good and the bad.

The Benefits Of Starting Skincare In Your Teens

Starting a skincare routine in your teens not only helps to keep your skin clean and clear, but a consistent routine also helps establish healthy habits and promotes a long-term commitment to skincare (winning!).  By following a skincare routine, teenagers can address specific concerns like excess oil production or seasonal dryness, as well as protect their skin from environmental damage and promote overall skin health.

For teenagers, I recommend routines that are simple, effective, and focused on their specific needs (here’s a look at how my 15-year-old nephew transformed his skin with only Purifying Face Wash and Skin Recovery Lotion!). A simple cleanser, toner, and moisturizer (a sunscreen moisturizer during the day) are a great place to start, but feel free to add in a few serums, masks, and gentle scrubs based on your skin’s needs. If you’re new to skincare and experimenting with different products, just be sure you’re patch testing!

What To Be Weary Of When Using Skincare In Your Teens

To fully comprehend the impact of skincare on teenagers, it is essential to understand the unique characteristics of adolescent skin. Teenage skin is different from adult skin in several ways, including increased activity with cell turnover and sebum production due to their faster metabolism. It’s because of this that younger people are more acne-prone. Skin gets sleepier as you age, but this isn’t a problem that young people face – this oftentimes leads to a problem of over-boosting their metabolism. For example, with the inflammatory condition of acne, the goal is to soothe and calm the skin. However, using anti-aging products will only further stimulate the skin.

This is also why I don’t recommend teenagers with acneic skin to use vitamin A products, such as retinol and tretinoin, because most (there are some exceptions) are geared towards aging concerns rather than acne. These stimulate cell turnover and collagen which is simply too active for young skin. I believe that you really shouldn’t start using vitamin A products until your acne is under control and behind you.

Read more about the right age to use retinol.

    Seek Out Trusted Skincare Experts

While TikTok and other social media platforms are great for sharing advice and product recommendations, it also boasts its fair share of “skin experts” with no real professional background and an income reliant on selling products through TikTok Shop. In addition to this, these platforms also promote overbuying and a toxic cycle of trying new products in an attempt to find a solution. Social media can be a great learning tool, but at the end of the day, everyone’s skin is different (I believe there are nine skin types). Seek out trusted professionals, educate yourself on product ingredients, and try to heed caution when it comes to a stranger’s advice on your feed.

The rising popularity of skincare for teens is a positive trend that promotes self-care, healthy habits, and self-confidence. By understanding the unique characteristics of teenage skin, addressing common skincare issues, and following a consistent skincare routine, teenagers can maintain healthy, radiant skin. It is important to encourage teenagers to approach skincare in a responsible and educated manner, avoiding excessive products, and obtaining their information from trusted estheticians and dermatologists.

  • Adult Breakouts? Use Rapid Response Detox Mask For Hormonal Acne

Adult Breakouts? Use Rapid Response Detox Mask For Hormonal Acne

Since my skincare beliefs are based on 9 Signature Skin Types, I don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach to formulating products. With that being said, sometimes, a product that was formulated for one skin type can end up benefitting a lot of others, too.

That’s what happened when I formulated the Rapid Response Detox Masque. Even though it was originally intended to fight hormonal breakouts, it addresses all kinds of other skin issues, too. Because of this, it quickly became one of our best-selling products. Here are five reasons I think you might love it too!

The Benefits of the Rapid Response Detox Masque

    1. It Can Help Clear Breakouts

Breakouts have a mind of their own and show up whenever and wherever they want. Skin is skin, so this mask can be used wherever your breakouts appear—no matter their type. It can work wonders on hormonal breakouts, cystic acne, period breakouts, and even body breakouts.

It’s all thanks to the ingredients. I formulated this mask with tea tree oil, salicylic acid, allantoin, and sodium hyaluronate. Together, these ingredients help clear blocked pores, limit breakout-causing bacteria, and soothe and hydrate the skin. The last part is key. Unlike other traditional acne products, this mask won’t dry out your skin or cause excess irritation. Instead, it creates a soothing environment for the skin, while simultaneously lessening breakout activity!

Simply apply a thin layer over your face once a week or every night after cleansing.

    2. It Can Prevent Clogged Pores

If you get little bumps that don’t look like regular blemishes and don’t go away, they could be closed comedones (AKA clogged pores). While the only surefire way to clear pores is through manual extraction, using the right skincare products can prevent them from happening in the first place.

If clogged pores are a concern for you, I suggest incorporating exfoliating acids and the Rapid Response Detox Masque into your routine. The combination of the two will dissolve the bonds that hold expired cells to the surface of the skin (so they don’t fall into your pores and block them). It’ll also support the moisture barrier, soothe the skin, and reduce blemish-causing bacteria.

You can apply it as needed to prevent clogged pores—either once a week or as often as every day after cleansing.

    3. It Can Help Minimize Redness

There are two kinds of redness this mask can address. The first is redness from blemishes. The second is redness from flushing and/or skin conditions like rosacea.

Let’s talk about redness from blemishes first. Since this mask is all about soothing and comforting the skin, it can help calm post-breakout inflammation and the redness associated with it. You can use it as a spot treatment. Once a blemish has minimized or gone away, apply a thin layer to the area before you go to sleep. I also recommend using the Post-Breakout Fading Gel a few nights a week for even faster results.

The other kind of redness is caused by over-circulation of the blood, resulting in visible dilated capillaries close to the surface of the skin. These skin types (like Skin Types 5 & 9) are often sensitive and must be treated gently. Since this mask contains soothing and hydrating ingredients, it can safely be used to treat this as well. In fact, we’ve heard wonderful things from customers who have rosacea. They’ve said Rapid Response Detox Masque helped reduce redness and calm and comfort their skin.

To help minimize redness, apply the mask once a week or anytime your skin is looking particularly flushed. You can even put the mask in the fridge before you apply it for an extra cooling experience!

    4. It Can Calm Irritation

Rosacea is considered a sensitive skin condition, so if people with rosacea can use this mask, so can other sensitive skin types. In fact, I recommend it! If you’ve used harsh products, over-exfoliated, or are experiencing the initial negative side effects from retinol, this mask can help calm irritation, or, as I say, put the fire out!

Simply apply a thin layer to your skin whenever you’re in need of some serious soothing. Again, storing it in the fridge will bring you even more cooling comfort.

    5. It Can Reverse Dehydration

Have you ever used traditional acne products that stripped your skin and left it feeling tight and dry? Or, maybe your skin is feeling more dehydrated than usual thanks to the change of seasons. Either way, the Rapid Response Detox Masque is a great solution. Since it contains sodium hyaluronate—the salt form of hyaluronic acid—it can restore water levels in the skin. In fact, you can use it as often as every night to balance the skin and increase hydration.

Other Uses for the Rapid Response Detox Masque

There are a couple of specific situations in which I love using the Rapid Response Detox Masque! These include airplane travel and post-wax skincare. Let’s talk about airplane travel first.

    Post-Flight

Airplanes certainly don’t do your skin any favors. While a lot of people do in-flight masks to keep their skin moist and hydrated, this simply isn’t the best method. That’s because, when you’re in a plane, the dry air pulls moisture out of the skin (this is called transepidermal water loss or TEWL). If you’re adding water-based hydration to your skin and not sealing it in with an occlusive (like a moisturizer or oil), you’re pretty much fighting a losing battle. The dry air will just pull it back out again.

That’s why I recommend waiting until after you get to your destination to rehydrate your skin. After a flight, exfoliate to dissolve dry surface cells. Then, follow up with a hydrating mask. Together, they will return your skin back to a healthy state. I recommend using the Rapid/Peel Duo, which includes both the Triple Berry Smoothing Peel and the Rapid Response Detox Masque.

    Post-Wax

This mask is also perfect for soothing post-wax skin—especially if you get tiny bumps, almost like a rash. This is a common inflammation response. Simply apply the mask on clean skin for a few days after waxing. It will help calm and soothe the inflammation. (On that note, read my guide to preventing ingrown hairs after waxing!)

How Often Can It Be Used?

Experiment to see how often it works best for you, but it can be used as needed. It’s important to know it only needs to stay on the skin for five minutes to effectively fight blemish-causing bacteria. However, you can use it longer to get more hydrating effects.

You can use it as often as you’d like, but it’s important to always listen to your skin. The point is to improve your skin and make it feel better!

Can I Leave It on Overnight as a Sleeping Mask?

Yes. Many of our customers use it this way. Wake up with intense hydration and start your day with a glow!

There you have it! Rapid Response Detox Masque is a jack of all trades! Originally designed for hormonal breakouts, it’s now your go-to for breakouts, redness, and hydration. It’s gentle, works for all skin types, and feels amazing. Use it as a spot treatment or hydrating mask, even post-flight or post-wax.

  • 5 things you should know about Ozempic from a dietitian

5 things you should know about Ozempic from a dietitian

A registered dietitian’s deep dive into the truth about Ozempic. Let’s dive into the science to look at how effective at weight loss it actually is and just how bad the side effects actually are. We also cover implications of the medication shortage and considerations for those with a history of an eating disorder or disordered eating. image with white bottle and various medications with text that says "5 things you should know about Ozempic (from an RD)"Trigger warning: discussions of weight loss numbers, eating disorder behaviors

Ozempic and other weight loss medications like Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity and Rybelsus are a hot topic right now.

Celebrities are publicly attributing their weight loss to these medications (Oprah being the latest one as I’m writing this). Doctors are prescribing them left and right for weight loss (and any other ailment you might bring to the doctor that they think is correlated to your weight). Patients with diabetes (for whom these medications were originally developed) can’t access these meds because there are shortages across the country and their health is suffering as a result.

From news headlines to TV advertisements to water cooler talk, Ozempic is everywhere. As a non-diet, weight-inclusive dietitian, I want to make sure that I am empowering my clients and my community with all the evidence-based information we have (and highlight what we don’t have) so that you can make an informed decision on whether or not to take these medications. It’s not my role to persuade you (because I believe in your agency and body autonomy) but it is my role to educate and inform, which I hope to do here.

I would never, ever shame or judge someone who decides to take these medications. It would make sense if you choose to take them or are thinking about taking them given the anti-fat culture we live in and the pressure from medical providers to “do something about your health, aka your weight.”

So I compiled what I’ve learned about these medications in this post and am highlighting what the research shows us on weight loss (how much weight you’re actually likely to lose – hint: it’s not as much as you might think), what the known side effects are, and why you should be careful about where you’re accessing these meds from.

    What is GLP-1?

These weight loss medications fall into a class of medications called GLP-1 agonists. GLP-1 is glucagon-like peptide, also known as an incretin. Incretins are secreted in the small intestine and help to increase insulin, decrease glucagon and slow down gastric emptying (i.e. digestion), all of which help to manage blood sugar. With incretin, glucose can slowly enter the bloodstream instead of being flooded with it.

It also stimulates satiety and fullness and helps you stay full longer, which is why the medication is now being used to control appetite and produce weight loss.

    What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is the generic name for the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy. Ozempic and Wegovy are just the brand names. Ozempic is FDA-approved for the treatment of diabetes, and in 2021, Wegovy became FDA-approved for the treatment of weight loss. Both are essentially the same medication only Wegovy has higher doses of semaglutide.

Once Wegovy became FDA-approved for weight loss, it quickly went into shortage and then doctors began prescribing Ozempic off-label (meaning prescribing it for something other than what it is FDA-approved for) for weight loss. And then Ozempic shortages quickly followed suit.

The problem with this is Ozempic and other GLP-1 and GIP agonists FDA-approved for diabetes treatment aren’t getting to the people who need them the most and can have serious health ramifications for those with diabetes.

Semaglutide is still in shortage as of writing this blog post in December 2023.

How do GLP-1 agonists help those with diabetes?

In folks with diabetes, incretin’s effects are reduced (by about 30%), which leads to higher blood sugars and poorer blood sugar control. GLP-1 agonists help control blood sugar and lower A1c levels, which measure your average blood sugar levels over the last three months. Studies show these medications can help lower A1c levels by 1 – 2.4 percentage points and can reduce the risk of cardiac events, regardless of weight changes.

5 things you should know about Ozempic and Wegovy (and other GLP-1 agonists)

    1. You may or may not lose weight with Ozempic and once you stop taking it, you will likely gain the weight right back.

Not everyone loses weight taking these medications, which is important to note, otherwise people who don’t lose weight on these meds are left feeling like failures.

The research on semaglutide for weight loss largely comes from the STEP trials, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which are funded by, you guessed it, the pharmaceutical company that makes this drug, Novo Nordisk.

When looking solely at the STEP trials, results show that 80% of people taking these medications lose some amount of weight. So about 20% of folks who take these meds won’t lose any weight. For those who do lose weight, at the very least, they are losing about 5% of their body weight (that’s about 10 lbs for someone who weighs 200 lbs).

Roughly half of the folks who took this medication saw a more moderate weight loss, about 10-15% of body weight (about 20-30 lbs for someone weighing 200 lbs) and roughly one third of folks taking this medication saw a pretty substantial weight loss of 20% or more body weight (about 40 lbs weight loss for someone weighing 200 lbs). This more substantial weight loss is of course what is driving all the hype and media coverage on these medications.

But let’s keep in mind that these trials were not only funded by the maker of the medications but also had a lot of exclusion criteria. People couldn’t join these studies if they were depressed, had any existing cardiovascular issues, and if they were females of childbearing age without a highly effective birth control method, just to mention a few.

When you look at other trials on semaglutide, without the pharma funding and extensive exclusion criteria, the results are less impressive. Only 40% of folks are losing at least 5% of body weight. Looking at a meta-analysis (review) of RCTs, most weight loss totals hovered around an average of 8-10 lbs, with a few studies showing more significant weight loss, around 25-40 lbs.

If your goal is to lose about 5-10% of your body weight then these medications might help you get there but if you are looking for more dramatic weight loss, these meds probably won’t help you meet your goals.

It’s also important to recognize what happens when you stop taking the medications. Because maybe your insurance will stop covering it, or you can no longer afford it, or there’s a shortage, etc.

Studies have looked at what happens when you take someone off semaglutide and replace it with a placebo and found that weight regain happens very quickly. Within a year, people regain almost all of their weight lost, even while still doing behavioral interventions like nutrition, exercise, and cooking classes.

Sounds very similar to all the research on what happens to your weight once you stop doing a diet (you gain it back).

Graphic with quote: "Studies have looked at what happens when you take someone off Ozempic (semaglutide) and replace it with a placebo and found that weight regain happens very quickly. Within a year, people regain almost all of their lost weight. Even while still doing behavioral interventions like nutrition, exercise, and cooking classes."

    2. Ozempic comes with very unpleasant side effects.

Studies show that a range of 60% up to 93% of people taking these medications will experience some side effects – the most common being gastrointestinal distress. These side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, GERD, and abdominal pain. For most people, severe GI symptoms should resolve within a few days and more mild GI side effects usually resolve within 8-12 weeks.

These medications also come with a black box warning that they can increase the risk of thyroid tumors. This is based purely on studies done in rodents so we don’t know how that extrapolates to humans, yet. There are human studies being conducted now but we won’t know the results until 2035 at the earliest. Because of this these medications are contraindicated for those with a family history of thyroid tumors.

There are other very rare side effects like pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney injury, and suicidal ideation. The FDA also recently added ileus to the list of side effects on the label, which is when your bowel stops functioning and you can’t remove waste – it can only be treated with surgery and can be fatal.

And then there’s the aesthetic reported side effect people are talking about, “Ozempic face”. As a result of rapid weight loss (for some) and likely not getting adequate nutrition, people report having loose skin on their face and a hollowing under the eyes and near the temples. This appearance is also seen in those suffering from malnutrition.

    3. There is a shortage of these weight loss drugs, which is leading compounding pharmacies to create versions that are not approved or regulated.

When a drug goes on the FDA drug shortage list, the FDA allows compounding pharmacies to mix up their own version of the drug without any FDA approval or screening.

But, here’s the catch. Novo Nordisk has a has a patent on the semaglutide molecule and only they can produce it until 2032 so compounding pharmacies don’t have access to this active ingredient.

So these pharmacies are selling medication and calling it semaglutide but it’s really something else. It might be a watered down version of it or it might be something called semaglutide sodium or acetate, the salt forms of semaglutide, which have not been shown to be safe or effective in humans, or it might be something else all together.

If you want to take a weight loss medication, get a prescription from your doctor and secure it from a licensed pharmacy. Stay far away from wellness centers, spas, or telehealth providers touting these medications at a low cost.

Graphic with quote: "If you want to take a weight loss medication, get a prescription from your doctor and secure it from a licensed pharmacy. Stay far away from wellness centers, spas, or telehealth providers touting these medications at a low cost."

    4. There’s no long-term data on Ozempic.

Let’s not forget that we have NO long term data on these drugs. Semaglutide was approved by the FDA for diabetes treatment in 2017 and the longest study I found was follow-up with a little over two years. We just don’t know if there are any long-term side effects. We also don’t know if you maintain your weight loss when you stay on this drug long-term.

It’s an eerily similar picture to past weight loss meds like Fen-Phen and Ephedra, both of which were hailed as miracle weight loss drugs with no long-term data and were eventually taken off the market because of irreversible serious adverse side effects like fatal hypertension, heart valve problems, heart attack, stroke, and death.

It’s important to weigh this when deciding to take the medication – you simply can’t know what the safety or efficacy is of taking Ozempic long-term. What we do know is that if you want to have a shot at maintaining your weight loss, you will have to stay on it long-term.

    5. Ozempic can be dangerous for those with a history of an eating disorder or disordered eating.

This medication ultimately puts you out of touch with your body’s natural hunger and fullness cues, which is counterproductive to eating disorder recovery and the intuitive eating framework. It causes you to eat less, which can exacerbate and fuel already restrictive eating patterns, and lead to potential nutrient deficiencies.

Graphic with quote: "Ozempic ultimately puts you out of touch with your body's natural hunger and fullness cues, which is counterproductive to eating disorder recovery and the intuitive eating framework. It causes you to eat less, which can exacerbate and fuel already restrictive eating patterns, and lead to potential nutrient deficiencies."

For those with binge eating disorder or who struggle with episodes of binging, coming off the medication can result in significant upswings in hunger, which may make you more susceptible to binges.

And then there’s the impact of weight changes on your mental health. If you don’t lose weight taking the medication, you may go to extremes to restrict your food intake. Or losing weight may trigger you to want to lose even more, fueling more restriction. Or if you lose significant weight and then gain it all back once you come off the medication, that change in body appearance may cause emotional distress and lead to disordered eating.

In the same way I wouldn’t recommend a diet or intentional weight loss to folks with an active eating disorder, a history of an eating disorder, or disordered eating, I wouldn’t recommend these weight loss medications either. It reinforces the idea that thin is best and results in inadequate nourishment and nutrition.

If you are struggling to get adequate nutrition while taking one of these medications or are debating on taking one of these medications and would like more individualized nutrition support, our team would love to help you. Book a nutrition assessment today.

Why Diets Don’t Work and How to Shift Your Focus to Longer-Term Solutions

Have you thought about how many diets, detoxes, and plans you’ve tried in your lifetime?

When we have new students join the Mindful Nutrition Method, on average, they’ve tried at least three diets, plans, or trends prior to coming to see us for sustainable solutions. The takeaway point here is that they must not work, right? Otherwise, they wouldn’t be coming to us afterward.

And guess what, our students aren’t alone!

This is becoming increasingly more common with so many new trends, quick-fix plans, and diets coming out weekly. This overflow in the health and wellness space is resulting in more and more people feeling stressed out about food, overwhelmed, and simply fed up with dieting. Can you relate?

Our mission here at Nutrition Stripped is to help you find confidence in nourishing yourself with ease, so you can ditch the diets and make peace with food. In order to do that, we need to hop off of the diet train and learn why these diets are doing much more harm than good.

Here I’m diving into the 5 reasons why diets don’t work for most of us, and discussing what you can do instead to mindfully care for your body and yourself.

    Why Diets Don’t Work

First and foremost, when we say diets, we mean choosing to abide by food guidelines and restrictions as a result of personal choice (think cutting carbs, counting macros, or abiding by a strict eating schedule). What we’re not referring to here are medically-necessary diets that are guided by a health professional (such as a low FODMAP diet for IBS or a gluten-free diet for Celiac Disease).

Most diets today involve the restriction of caloric intake in some way, shape, or form. That may involve restricting a particular food group, or simply decreasing intake altogether. In my experience as a Registered Dietitian and Mindful Nutrition Method Coach working with hundreds of our Mindful Nutrition Method students, I’ve seen the impact this can have time and time again.

When your body experiences this decrease in energy, a few things may happen both physically and mentally:

Increased cravings for starchy carbohydrates, particularly those higher in sugar
Decreased confidence and ease around food
A tendency to hyperfocus on food intake and food choices
Increased food guilt, stress, and anxiety
A loss of control around certain foods
A loss of control in particular eating scenarios
    An increase in digestive complications

These complications lead to a variety of additional challenges that can prevent you from maintaining this way of eating for the long term. Let’s dive into what those are.

    1. Dieting Can Take The Joy And Pleasure Out Of The Food Experience

If you know me, you’ve likely heard me say this before, and it’s worth repeating: food is more than nourishment. It’s tradition, culture, pleasure, and joy and it’s okay to celebrate the many roles food plays in our lives!

Every day, I cook meals that not only nourish my body but also make me so happy and filled with joy to experience.

I love being in the kitchen alone or cooking with my husband Jesse. I really enjoy trying new recipes with new ingredients, then sitting down to savor a delicious meal (not always “Instagram worthy” either). If we’re cooking and eating together, we love talking about our day and our plans for the future. It’s such a great time to connect.

Food is such a powerful way to bring nourishment and joy into our lives, but unfortunately, so many diets are really strict, and rigid, and completely ignore this. They remove joy from the eating experience and can make you feel as if cooking is a chore or that you’re meals are unsatisfying.

They can cause you to view food only as a means to an end, and constantly leave you “looking forward to” the next time you “can” eat that food item you really want to have, but “can’t”, causing a lot of stress as a result of focusing on what you should or shouldn’t eat.

Instead, try focusing on creating a positive, joyful experience around your meals.

This could involve finding recipes that excite you or even simply eating at the table without any devices or distractions. It could be turning on music while you cook a meal for yourself or inviting a friend over for a mini-pot luck night in.

Reframing food in this way can help you create a whole new appreciation for fueling your body with nourishment, love, and joy.

    2. Short-Term Thinking — Start And Stop Mentality

The second reason why diets fail most people so often is short-term thinking. The 21-day this, 30-day that. What are you supposed to do after that time period?

They’re designed to try to get you a big result as quickly as possible. They often fail to then teach you how to integrate that into your life in a balanced way.

Switch from this short-term, one-size-fits-all thinking to long-term, sustainable thinking. Make choices for yourself that you can realistically sustain for years. Ask yourself, can I do this every day? If not, don’t add it to your life.

Think about this — following a diet can be a lot of work. You need to learn the rules, buy the right ingredients, follow the meal plan, and potentially skip on or work around your normal social outings. And then you end up following that for, let’s say, 30 days.

Imagine what would happen if instead, you refocused all of that time and energy on learning a new skill or developing a habit that would last you much longer than that. Maybe instead of following a trend or popular diet, you simply focus your energy on cooking more at home.

It’s this kind of long-term thinking that can give you the skills to navigate your health 365 days a year.

    3. They Often Require You to Have Foods that Are “Off-Limits”

Oh boy, we’ve all been there, myself included. We’ve been so “good” on our diet, but then we go out to eat or go to a social gathering and are offered foods we “can’t have”. This increasingly makes us hyperaware, hypersensitive, and focused on that food choice. Right?

And that can cause two unhealthy extremes: either isolating yourself from others to avoid that temptation or completely overindulging, sometimes even to the point of feeling sick.

So here’s my tip, don’t follow guidelines that tell you to eliminate specific foods or food groups for the sake of losing weight or because someone on social media told you to because they do.

Eliminating foods for the sake of dieting without medical necessity does so much more harm than good. It contributes to that yo-yo diet cycle of getting “on” and “off-track” and dieting over and over again.

    4. Diets Are One-Size-Fits-All — They Don’t Take Your Unique Body And Life Into Consideration

Following a popular diet’s guidelines doesn’t always align with your unique wants and needs.

While it may seem easy to pick a diet and follow it because you don’t have to think about anything, you end up following rules you think you “should” be doing, without actually evaluating what you need in your life and why.

This can create a big disconnect between your inherent wants and needs and what you’re actually doing. As a result, you can feel guilty, stressed, and overwhelmed around food as opposed to feeling peaceful and at ease.

Instead, focus on what you really want. What works really well for you and your life? Jot down exactly what healthy looks like and feels like for you, and why you want those things in your life. Create your wellness vision.

When you have that clarity, you’ll begin making decisions that align with your unique needs, rather than what someone else says.

    5. They Ask You to Do Too Much All At Once, Making it Hard to Maintain

Lastly, diets are often structured in such a short time frame that they ask you to make dozens of changes overnight. When there’s so much change all at once, it’s nearly impossible to keep up with it all.

Instead, shift to slowly building up your changes and habits over time. Intentionally stack one on top of another so they’re all working together to build a solid foundation for your lifestyle change.

This means taking that vision of wellness you have for yourself and breaking it down into tiny action steps. It doesn’t mean waking up tomorrow and trying to do everything all at once. It’s taking it one item at a time and really working through it until it’s easy and fully integrated into your life.

Then move on to the next habit.

We covered a lot in this video, but if there’s one thing I want you to take away, it’s that we all have unique lifestyles and bodies to honor, but most diets, detoxes, or plans don’t take that into consideration.

Ditch the Scale and Measure Your Health in Other Ways

There are many ways to measure and reach your health goals without dieting — including ways to measure outcomes and success outside of the scale. I can’t tell you how important this is! If you let the number on the scale dictate whether or not you’re successful, whether or not you’re happy, you’ll constantly be in the diet cycle.

Instead, focus on how you feel, the practices you’re engaging in, the habits you’ve implemented and the goals you’ve accomplished.

    Some examples might include:

Blood work or labs if you’re managing a certain health condition
    Increased energy levels
    Better digestion
Feeling more confident in general and around food
Expressing creativity and joy in your life
Honoring what your physical body allows you to do (i.e. give loved ones a hug, exercise, think, work, breathe, etc.)
    Eating free from distraction
Feeling less stress around food and food choices

  • 5 Skin Care Goals For Radiant Skin

5 Skin Care Goals For Radiant Skin

Are you on a quest for healthy, glowing skin but not sure where to start? Achieving a radiant complexion is more than a matter of luck; it’s about setting the right skin care goals. From sun protection to deep hydration, we’re going to guide you through five essential skin care goals you should strive for if you want to achieve radiant-looking skin.

5 Skin Care Goals You Should Start Now

Goal 1: Reduce Premature Signs Of Aging

One of the most effective ways to reduce premature signs of aging is the regular use of sunscreen. Sunscreen acts as a protective barrier against the sun’s harmful UV rays, which are a primary contributor to early skin aging. While time spent in sunshine can be good for the soul, UV exposure can lead to wrinkles, fine lines and a loss of elasticity in the skin, not to mention an increased risk of skin cancer. By applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days or during winter, you provide your skin with an essential line of defense that preserves the skin’s natural collagen, overall health and youthfulness. SPF is intended to be reapplied throughout the day, especially after a swim or a workout, to keep your skin shielded from sun damage.

Our Radiant Protection SPF Fluid is a great way to start the day. This formula shields the skin from the sun’s harsh UVA and UVB rays with zinc oxide, for broad-spectrum sun protection, and bakuchiol and niacinamide, to reveal smoother, more youthful-looking skin. Think of it as your secret weapon for all-day protection. You can view the entire sun care range here to shield yourself from harmful UV rays.

Goal 2: Reduce And Prevent Breakouts

Even if your skin is well-protected against sun damage, the quest for perfect, glowing skin can still face obstacles like breakouts. These troublesome issues arise when pores get clogged with a combination of oil, dirt and dead skin cells, leading to inflamed and noticeable blemishes. To effectively manage breakouts, it’s essential to maintain a consistent cleansing routine that removes impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. You may be familiar with double cleansing, a staple in the Korean 10-step skincare regimen. Double cleansing involves two distinct types of cleansers. The first step uses an oil-based cleanser to gently lift off surface impurities like makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum. This type of cleanser attracts and draws out oil-based debris from the skin. Step two follows this wash with a water-based cleanser to ensure a thorough clean. This second step is crucial for removing any remaining residue, breaking down the oil components of any lingering impurities.

Regular exfoliation is another powerful method for reducing breakouts. By removing dead skin cells, exfoliation prevents pore blockages, which helps transform dull, tired skin into a radiant complexion. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as lactic acid, aid in the removal of dead skin cells to keep pores looking clear. Consider adding exfoliating products into your skin care routine to encourage fresh, new skin cells to come to the surface.

After laying the groundwork for clearer skin, let’s now focus on the delicate eye area (often the first place to reveal signs of aging).

Goal 3: Minimize The Look Of Eye Wrinkles

Achieving the fourth skin care goal involves turning your attention to the delicate eye area. It’s often said that the eyes are a reflection of life’s joys! Yet, with time, this joy can also leave its mark in the form of fine lines and wrinkles around the delicate eye area. Facial muscles connect directly to our skin, so, every smile or frown makes these underlying muscles contract and expand, often resulting in undesired crow’s feet around the eyes.

To combat eye wrinkles, try one of our best sellers, the Marine Flower Peptide Eye Cream. The Marine Flower Peptide Eye Cream employs naturally derived plant peptides, algae extracts and a Smart Collagen+ Complex to visibly lift and plump the eye area. It also contains botanical hyaluronic acid to smooth, plump and maintain long-lasting hydration. One of our website reviewers, Kaitlyn, says that this eye cream is her new favorite, stating: “I have tried so many expensive medical grade eye creams and this eye cream beats them all! I wake up with hydrated undereyes and I look refreshed!”

Goal 4: Promote Skin Elasticity & Firmness On Your Neck & Face

Now that you know how to improve the eye area, you’ll want to draw your attention to improving the overall look of elasticity and firmness in your skin texture. And don’t forget the neck! The neck is an important area that often gets overlooked; however, it’s just as susceptible to signs of aging as the face. If you’re noticing saggy skin on your neck, face or jawline, ingredients like peptides and botanicals will help. Our Bamboo Firming Fluid, for example, is designed to make the skin look firmer and lifted. This concentrate is formulated with bamboo, a Natural Retinol Alternative and Swiss green apples to improve the look of saggy skin around the face, jawline and neck. But remember, skin firmness is not just about topical treatments. A balanced diet, staying hydrated and protecting your skin from sun damage also play significant roles in maintaining its elasticity and firmness.

    Goal 5: Enhance Skin Hydration

Well-hydrated skin not only looks plump and healthy but also functions more efficiently — especially when protecting itself. In terms of lifestyle habits, staying well-hydrated will help your skin maintain moisture and elasticity. If your skin feels zapped of moisture, adding a refreshing toner to your daily ritual is the easiest change you can make. Our Stone Crop Hydrating Mist, as the name suggests, features stone crop, a potent plant that replenishes moisture and brightens the look of the skin. In addition, facial oils also stand out as one of the top choices for providing essential hydration. Try our Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil, which combines active ingredients for an intense dose of hydration to improve the look of skin tone and texture.
